WWE Battleground 2015: Worst Matches in History of PPV

Aaron BowerJun 25, 2015

Although 2015 marks only the third edition of WWE Battleground, the two previous ones have offered up both a mixture of good and bad matches.

Some of the finer matches have been exceptional, while some of the ones that rank toward the bottom end of the scale have been truly forgettable (or memorable for all the wrong reasons).

But what were the worst matches in the relatively short history of WWE's Battleground pay-per-view, as we look ahead to this year's edition?

The Real Americans vs. Santino Marella and The Great Khali (2013)

The WWE Tag Team Championships weren't on the line at the first Battleground show, but the card did feature this bizarre and ridiculous tag team match.

The Real Americans weren't exactly the worst team ever in WWE history, and with Zeb Colter by their side, they proved to be a useful and interesting addition to the division at a time when quality was seriously hard to come by.

But here, they were up against perhaps the most ridiculous pairing in tag team history, squaring off against the unlikely duo of The Great Khali and none other than Santino Marella.

The lack of background and logic to the match left it feeling like nothing more than a stale addition to a card in need of matches to beef it out, and the result was entirely inevitable.

Lasting little over seven minutes, Cesaro and Jack Swagger polished off Marella and Khali with little trouble.

Curtis Axel vs. R-Truth (2013)

It now seems incredible to think that this was a match for a major championship, but these two men met with the Intercontinental Championship on the line at Battleground two years ago.

This was back in the time when Curtis Axel had been repackaged to appear alongside Paul Heyman, and for a while, had a serious push.

He was on a decent roll heading into Battleground in 2013, which was held in October that year, but this match against R-Truth felt like nothing more than filler, in truth.

It was barely pay-per-view quality, and Axel's rather mundane, bland defense felt like nothing more than a match that didn't really matter.

Fandango vs. Adam Rose (2014)

It was on the pre-show granted, but this last-minute addition to last year's Battleground card was arguably one of the worst bouts in the history of this short-lived event.

It was only added to the card at the very last minute, but bizarrely, both men's introductions almost lasted as long as the entirety of the match.

The most notable part of the contest was the distraction from Layla and Summer Rae, and when Rose pinned Fandango with the Party Foul, it brought to an end one of the most forgettable bouts in Battleground (and recent WWE) history.
