Bronx Bombers Back On Top

Steve PalumboSep 8, 2009

It's been eight years since Luis Gonzalez's bloop heard around the world sunk the unsinkable Mariano Rivera and the New York Yankees. That chilly November night left the Yankees out in the cold without their 27th World Series title, crushing the hearts of millions of New Yorkers looking to be uplifted after the terror attacks of 9/11.

In the following seasons, the deep pocketed Bombers dug a little deeper throwing money at every possible free agent including Alex Rodriguez. Those billions of dollars have produced exactly zero titles. Instead the Yankees have taken a back seat to their hated rivals, the Boston Red Sox

In 2008, the team was hampered by injuries and missed the playoffs for the first time in 14 seasons. During the winter, the Yankees still spent millions of dollars but with a different purpose. They used their money wisely fixing a pitching staff that had more holes then the Detroit Lions defense. The Yankees brought players in to compliment an already murderous line-up including star free agent Mark Teixeira, a candidate for this years AL MVP. They went after proven arms like CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett, to help develop their young pitching staff. To this point it's money well spent.

After Monday nights double header sweep of last years AL Pennant winner Tampa Bay, the Yankees widened their lead to nine games over the second place Red Sox. They already have as many wins (89) this year in 139 games then they did all of last year. The teams .283 batting Average is second in the Majors. They are tops in Home Runs with 216. Combine that with a pitching staff that is in the top half of the league in ERA and second in strikeouts and you have a team primed to play deep into the post season.

This years version of the Bronx Bombers is set to do something they haven't done in the last 8 years, win a World Series and bring that elusive 27th title back to the Bronx..
