Mile Low Series

Jeff SummersSep 5, 2009

Given their struggles during the 2009 season, it was clear at the all-star break that the Arizona Diamondbacks would be playing the role of “spoiler” as the season progressed. Arizona has long been out of the race for the play-offs and are now playing for pride and perhaps auditioning to the coaching staff for a spot on the 2010 roster.

The Rockies on the other hand are battling for the play-offs by maintaining their lead over the San Francisco Giants in the National League wild card and chasing the front-running Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arizona typically plays the Rockies very tough and as the Diamondbacks came to Denver there was hope that Arizona could make the post season race a little more exciting.

Game one of the series went as expected at least for the first part of the game. Dan Haren pitched masterfully making his third consecutive start where he looked like the Dan Haren we saw in the first half of the season.

As he left the game the Diamondbacks were leading 4-2 and it looked as though Arizona would take a game from the rival Rockies. Instead the bullpen which has been good as of late gave up three runs and the snakes dropped the first game 5-4.

Game two of the series was today and the Diamondbacks sent Doug Davis to the mound. Davis has pitched well all season but has been the recipient of poor run support. Today was no exception. Davis would not walk a batter and would allow only three runs on seven hits during his six inning outing.

Unfortunately for Davis the Diamondbacks could only conjure up a single run and would lose the game 4-1. This meant the Diamondbacks had once again lost another series; an all too familiar event this season. They would now enter the final game of the series attempting to avoid the sweep.

The Diamondbacks will send Yousmeiro Petit to the mound, not exactly a recipe for success this season. It’s funny, although the team is a mile above sea level it is playing like they are playing a mile underwater.
