Prediction: Dustin Johnson will win the 2015 U.S. Open
There has not been a four-way tie for the U.S. Open lead through three rounds since 1953. Of the four golfers tied for first, Jordan Spieth is the only one to have won a major tournament.
But Spieth is having quite the battle with Chambers Bay, including an encounter with an 18th hole that he called "dumb," according to Coleman McDowell of Golf.com.
Jordan Day has finished as high as second at the U.S. Open, but he is not in good shape. After collapsing on the ninth hole on Friday due to vertigo, Day put together a memorable round in which he shot two-under in Round 3.
But one can't help but wonder how long he'll be able to keep this up. After the third-round, as reported by the Associated Press in the Denver Post, Day spoke with a USGA official.
"I didn't feel that great coming out early. I felt pretty groggy on the front nine just from the drugs that I had in my system, then kind of flushed that out on the back nine. But then it kind of came back — the vertigo came back a little bit on the 13th tee box, and then felt nauseous all day. I started shaking on 16 tee box and then just tried to get it in, really. Just wanted to get it in.
"
Dustin Johnson will pull away from the field and win the U.S. Open with a final score of seven-under. Showing that he can tame Chambers Bay, Johnson is the most well-rounded player of the leaders.
Johnson was perfect hitting his fairways on Saturday. That is not an over-exaggeration, either, as Golf Digest explains.
Hitting 14 of a possible 14 fairways, Johnson was able to set himself up nicely as a cushion to deal with some of the hazards that Chambers Bay is delivering. The course's layout and condition has led former golfer Gary Player to tell ESPN this:
He has the long-hitting capability to get to the green as quick as possible, averaging 318 yards per drive. With that kind of distance and accuracy it gives him less of a chance to get caught out on the outskirts of the fairways. He showed off his power capabilities on the 15th hole as his club choice impressed FOX Sports' Shane Bacon.
Johnson has had his moments where Chambers Bay has gotten the best of him. He was two-under going to the par-four 13th when a double-bogey resulted in him losing his outright lead.
He went on to par the rest of the course, showing plenty of resolve that can come in handy down the stretch if things are getting close.
His putting play is plenty solid as well. While it is not the most consistent, he is capable of reading the greens at Chambers Bay well enough to sink tough putts, like his birdie on hole six.
Johnson has a history of collapsing in the final rounds of tournaments. He lost the 2010 U.S. Open by shooting an 82 and the British Open a year later on the 14th hole. Now he'll get another shot at bringing home his first major, and he won't blow this one.
