WWE Missed Opportunities: Nikki Bella Ruling the Divas Division Not a Good Look

Travis WakemanJun 20, 2015

Nikki Bella has held the WWE Divas title since November 23, 2014. For those of you who may not tune in to WWE programming on a regular basis, you read that correctly.

Nikki has grown by leaps and bounds in terms of in-ring work, but seeing her dominate the Divas division in the fashion she has is a little ridiculous. Should Nikki be made to look that much better than every other female on the roster?

Nikki has had close calls in title defenses against the likes of Naomi and Paige. She's even been defeated in several nontitle and tag team matches. But in typical WWE booking, that is just done to make the challenger look like she has a chance to take her belt away.

Many of Nikki's wins have come with the help of her twin sister, Brie Bella.

That's right, WWE has completely erased what happened at SummerSlam last year when Nikki turned on her sister to help Stephanie McMahon defeat her. Nikki then went on to say some horrible things about Brie, but that has all been forgotten for basically no reason. Yes, the two are sisters. But Nikki used her sister as her personal assistant, and there was never any resolution other than for Brie to let it go.

Not only did that make absolutely no sense, but the fact that no woman on the roster is able to solve the dreaded Bella Twins doesn't either.

You have to give Nikki credit for being a fighting champion. But the fact that pulling the switch—or "twin magic"—with her sister is still used as a tactic to win matches is bad booking. They've done that for how many years now? And we're to believe that a referee would never catch on to it?

Perhaps Nikki's lengthy title reign is due to a lack of depth within the current roster.

Gone are the days when WWE had a stacked women's division. A little over a decade ago, Trish Stratus, Lita, Victoria, Molly Holly, Gail Kim, Jazz and Ivory were all very capable inside the ring, and fans could see them as legitimate champions.

Now, Nikki Bella only has to contend with the likes of Layla, Summer Rae, Cameron and Tamina. Paige and Naomi are really the only serious threats to take the title, and she's beaten them both multiple times.

Why hasn't a Diva or two from NXT been given a shot on the main roster? Regular viewers of NXT can see how much more competitive the women's division is there compared to the main roster.

Sasha Banks, Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Bayley are all better than just about any of the girls on the main roster. Plus, Emma has been working back in NXT and may be able to rejuvenate her career down there.

If WWE officials want to hold off calling up one or more of these women, that's fine. But the product within the Divas division on the main roster has gotten very stale.

However, that brings us to the real reason as to why Nikki may have been chosen to hold the belt for so long.

Looking at the history of the Divas title, AJ Lee is the longest-reigning champion of all time. Her first of three reigns as champion lasted 295 days. Could WWE be looking to take AJ out of the record books as quickly as possible?

It's likely that doing so is indeed a motivating factor for Nikki to hold the title for a great length of time. If Nikki is going to break the record, she will need to hold on to the title until at least September 15, 2015. That's close to another three months.

If WWE chooses to go this route, the Divas division probably won't get much more entertaining until at least the latter part of the year. The opportunity to become Divas champion will have to wait for many of the women on the roster as a result.

But if I were a betting man, I'd bet on Nikki having that belt until at least September 15.
