Fred Davis Released by Patriots: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappJun 19, 2015

Fred Davis' time with the New England Patriots lasted for all of a month, as they cut him on Friday, per the team's official Twitter account.

After being reinstated to the league after missing the entirety of the 2014 season due to a suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, the Patriots signed him to a one-year deal in early May. He was expected to compete to be the team's third-string tight end, behind Rob Gronkowski and Scott Chandler.

Clearly, he didn't impress the team's coaching staff at this week's minicamp. He was the second tight end to be cut this week by New England, as Tim Wright was also released and eventually claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Davis, 29, spent the entirety of his career in Washington before being cut by the team this offseason, finishing his time there with 162 receptions for 2,043 yards and 13 touchdowns. Once considered a bright young talent at the position, the former second-round pick now may find it hard to catch on with a team after his issues with the league office and a history of injuries that kept him out of 19 games between 2011 and 2013.

The fact that Davis wasn't able to even make it to training camp with the Patriots does not bode well for his future prospects in the NFL.
