John Cena Should Miss WWE Battleground 2015 to Propel Kevin Owens

Donald WoodJun 19, 2015

After beating Kevin Owens at Money in the Bank, John Cena was brutally attacked and missed Monday’s episode of WWE Raw. To continue selling the injury, Cena should miss the 2015 edition of Battleground.

Taking the loss to Cena was exactly what the WWE Universe wanted to avoid after the NXT champion earned a stunning victory at Elimination Chamber, but the post-match attack made Owens look like an out-of-control Superstar.

Cena missing Raw made the injury look legitimate, but to prove to the fans that Owens did serious damage, the 15-time world champion should fail his physical before Battleground and not gain medical clearance.

Initially, not having Cena on a pay-per-view is a stunning concept because he is the WWE’s iron man, but with Brock Lesnar on the Battleground card and a marquee secondary match between Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt, the company could afford to keep Cena off the show.

Of all the people on the roster, Cena deserves to have a few weeks away from in-ring action to let his body rest and recover. The man has been putting on elite matches every week during the United States Championship open challenges, and giving him a break should be a top priority.

Not only would Cena get healthy with some time off, but the time away from the ring would also make Owens look like a monster.

The first two matches between Cena and Owens were instant classics. While the WWE Universe may not like the outcome of the second bout—Cena won clean at Money in the Bank—the in-ring competition is unlike anything we’ve seen from the face of the company in a long time. Say what you want about Cena, but he is holding his own in the ring against arguably one of the most talented big men in wrestling history.

This feud will undoubtedly have a third and deciding match, but it shouldn’t take place at Battleground, not after the caliber of bouts the two men have produced over the last month. The fans deserve to have Cena eager to return from injury and Owens eager to put him right back on the shelf.

Add in another possible Match of the Year candidate, and saving the rubber match between Cena and Owens until SummerSlam would truly be best for business.

If Cena does miss Battleground, the WWE Universe will understand the severity of the situation, and the storyline will allow the United States champion to lose the jokes and get very serious. Owens tried to take away his livelihood, and this should bring out the edgy side of Cena that most fans agree cuts better promos.

Lesnar making an appearance on SummerSlam would be huge for the company’s second-largest PPV of the year, but pushing the show as Cena’s return bout and the rubber match for the U.S. title would make it one of the deepest cards of the year.

The third part of the series will be great regardless of where it takes place, but wrestling fans should be hoping to keep Cena out of action past Battleground, setting up the biggest possible culminating moment at the August PPV.

After the momentum he has built, Owens pulling off another clean win over Cena at SummerSlam would be monumental.
