WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from June 10
At NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable, Samoa Joe stunned the wrestling world by making his WWE debut and confronting the brand's top dog, Kevin Owens.
Thursday night, he stepped inside the squared circle for his first official match. How did he fare in his first opportunity to impress fans who may have been seeing him compete for the first time? Which Superstar would be his first unfortunate victim? And how would Owens look to affect the proceedings?
Elsewhere on the card, Becky Lynch returned to the squared circle for the first time since her heart-wrenching defeat at the hands of Sasha Banks at Unstoppable.
Would she emerge victorious, or would the stigma of her most disappointing defeat haunt her, costing her another win?
Tyler Breeze, Baron Corbin, Zack Ryder, Emma, Mojo Rawley and the returning Blue Pants rounded out yet another action-packed edition of the most exciting brand in sports entertainment.
Relive the June 10 episode with this look back at the results, highlights, grades and analysis.
Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley vs. Elias Samson and Mike Wallace
1 of 6A few weeks back, Mojo Rawley made his return to NXT television, which teased a partnership with main roster Superstar Zack Ryder.
Thursday night, that tease became reality as the duo squared off with the enhancement team of Elias Samson and Mike Wallace.
The babyfaces dominated the competition early, but Samson and Wallace turned the tide in their favor, working over Ryder.
The former United States champion made the hot tag to Rawley, who fired off a few splashes and delivered a discus punch. He and Ryder put the opposition away with a spinebuster/Rough Ryder combination.
Result
Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley defeated Elias Samson and Mike Wallace.
Grade
D
Analysis
So the main roster star, who has managed to stay over through some sort of wacky miracle, struggled with D-level developmental stars like Samson and Wallace, but the ridiculous caricature that is Rawley can fuel his team to victory?
Mojo is the most unlikable character on television, thanks in large part to the fact that he resembles the cartoon characters that dominated the industry in the 1980s but have not been cool in a decade.
Ryder is wasted in this role, but at least he gets to be on television. That is not always a guarantee on Raw and SmackDown.
Blue Pants vs. Emma
2 of 6
The fans inside the NXT Arena were molten hot for Blue Pants as she made her return to Full Sail University to battle the new and improved Emma.
Emma controlled the action early after a sneak attack to start. She applied a vicious surfboard and grabbed hold of the hair for added effect.
Ol' Blue soldiered back, showing great resilience but ultimately falling prey to the Emma Lock and a submission loss.
Result
Emma defeated Blue Pants by submission.
Grade
C
Analysis
The win continues Emma's recent roll in NXT, but it comes at the expense of Blue Pants, who is one of the most popular stars on the brand despite the fact that she is not under contract.
Emma should make for a quality contender to Sasha Banks' women's title, and potential matches with Becky Lynch could be fantastic.
This worked for the small amount of time it was granted.
Tyler Breeze vs. Bull Dempsey
3 of 6Tyler Breeze continued his flirtation with babyface status Thursday night, battling the despised Bull Dempsey in singles competition.
Dempsey wore Breeze down early and attempted his top-rope head-butt, but Breeze rolled out of the way.
Breeze tired out his opponent, prompting a chant of "cardio" from the fans.
The Beauty Shot finished Dempsey seconds later.
Result
Tyler Breeze defeated Bull Dempsey.
Grade
C-
Analysis
First things first: Bull Dempsey is dead in the water. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.
The generic performer never really got over with the audience, and now much more talented and diverse workers have surpassed him.
Breeze is an interesting case because he is clearly a top developmental talent but not necessarily on the level of Kevin Owens, Finn Balor or Hideo Itami. Thus, he tends to float aimlessly until someone gets hurt or an opening frees up for him to slide into a marquee storyline.
That he has been positioned as a babyface two of the last three weeks is intriguing and should bear watching in the coming weeks.
Becky Lynch vs. Jessie McKay
4 of 6
Becky Lynch looked to make up for her disappointing loss to Sasha Banks at Unstoppable as she battled fellow former SHIMMER women's wrestling star (and new developmental recruit) Jessie McKay.
Jessie stunned Lynch early, getting in more offense than one would have expected.
The former No. 1 contender fought back, delivered a hammerlock suplex and Samoan Drop and finished off McKay with the armbar for the submission win.
Result
Becky Lynch defeated Jessie McKay.
Grade
C+
Analysis
Becky is a joy to watch at this point because she continues to learn and improve with every passing match.
Jessie looked solid here and showed flashes of a great performer. With some main roster call-ups to be coming in the near future, she is the type of performer who could slide in and continue building the women's division into one of the most talented in the industry.
Baron Corbin vs. Angelo Dawkins
5 of 6
Baron Corbin wrestled Angelo Dawkins Wednesday night.
He squashed him, pinning him following the End of Days after just two minutes of action.
Result
Baron Corbin defeated Angelo Dawkins.
Grade
F
Analysis
If you have been watching Corbin from the day he first arrived on the scene in NXT, you have seen this a million times.
At some point, Creative is going to have to give him something better to do that involves longer and more competitive matches. If not, fans are going to turn on him even more than they already have.
Samoe Joe vs. Scott Dawson
6 of 6The Mechanics' Scott Dawson was the unlucky first victim of Samoa Joe on Wednesday night, with NXT champion Kevin Owens sitting in on commentary.
Joe outmatched Dawson from the get-go, delivering a big back elbow in the corner. He then caught a charging Dawson with the ura nage suplex.
Moments later, Joe finished with the Muscle Buster for the pinfall victory.
After the match, Joe called Owens to the ring for a match, but the NXT champion refused, insultingly calling him a "rookie."
General manager William Regal denied Joe a title match but granted him a non-title on next week's show.
Result
Samoa Joe defeated Scott Dawson.
Grade
C
Analysis
The match was a bit disappointing. At only three minutes, Joe had little time to introduce himself to the audience. In fact, if this was the casual fans' first exposure to Joe, it is likely they were unimpressed.
Regal's post-match announcement sets up a huge main event for next week's show, and it could not have come at a better time, especially after this week's placeholder show.
At the very least, Joe looked to be in his best shape in years, so there's that.
