Booking Dudley Boyz-Wyatt Family Match Is No-Brainer Move

Ryan DilbertJun 9, 2015

A squabble on Twitter has placed an intriguing SummerSlam bout in WWE's hands—Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley vs. Luke Harper and Erick Rowan.

Pitting the realigned Wyatt Family members against one of the most popular teams in company history would just be smart business. It would showcase an emerging team, create buzz by bringing back another and build on a narrative that has already begun.

Harper and Rowan have taken to using a combination cutter/flapjack double-team move as their finisher. That's sparked an online spat with one of the men who once used that same signature move throughout his career.

Monday's Raw wasn't the first time that Bray Wyatt's former followers used The Dudley Boyz's Dudley Death Drop (aka 3D) maneuverit was just the most high-profile stage where they performed it.

Up to then, Harper and Rowan executed it at house shows and used it to finish off Los Matadores on last week's edition of Superstars. On Monday, they whipped out the weapon again, once more taking down the bullfighters.

This time, Bubba Ray was watching.

He sent an angry tweet about someone else doing the move he and his "brother" made famous. Harper responded in full character:

As simply as that, WWE has a compelling tag team matchup on the table. It sure sounds like Bubba Ray is willing to sign a deal with the company. Harper and Rowan, meanwhile, have to be thrilled at the chance to take on future Hall of Famers.

WWE just has to pull the trigger.

The company should do just that. It hasn't created a single promo or scripted a single moment, and fans are already buzzing about this potential clash. There's a great appeal to seeing this collision between two generations.

The folks at the Markin' Out podcast are looking ahead to later in the summer:

Fans like Aaron Walker are letting WWE know what they want:

There's more than this Twitter beef and stolen move to build on, should the company decide to appease those fans.

Bubba Ray recently collided with both Harper and Rowan in the ring. The former tag champ made a surprise appearance at this year's Royal Rumble and found himself in the center of a Wyatt Family reunion.

It was the Wyatt patriarch who eliminated Bubba Ray, but WWE can easily queue up clips of the returning star and Harper trading blows, focusing on that confrontation.

Bubba Dudley clocks Luke Harper at the Royal Rumble.

It can have Bubba Ray come storming back looking for revenge. He can bark about watching Rowan and Harper steal his and D-Von's move, wanting to continue their fight from the Rumble and take on WWE's most rough-and-tumble team today just to prove himself.

Other than the setup already being in motion, WWE should go this route because it adds much-needed excitement around the tag team division.

The New Day is performing well, but there's little depth behind it. Tyson Kidd's injury takes his and Cesaro's duo out of the equation for the moment. Jimmy Uso is waiting around for his brother to heal.

In the meantime, mixing nostalgia with promise is the best bet.

Bringing back The Dudley Boyz would be great fun. They are an electric pair with a championship pedigree who remind fans of WWE's last golden era of tag wrestling. Going up against Harper and Rowan would create an instant money match for SummerSlam's midcard.

It's also a chance to elevate the bearded monsters who just recently got back together. Even if they lost, battling legends in a memorable, hard-fought match would raise Harper and Rowan's profile in a big way.

There is no team on the roster that can do that right now.

And what's the marquee tag match WWE can throw onto the SummerSlam card? The Wyatt Family vs. The Prime Time Players, Los Matadores vs. The Ascension or The Lucha Dragons against The New Day are all okay options at best.

Infusing The Dudley Boyz into the roster would offer a spark that none of those matches can.

The primary focus of WWE writers right now will of course be on Money in the Bank. When the discussion turns to SummerSlam, though, the idea of The Dudley Boyz looking to mix it up with Harper and Rowan needs to come up.

Saying yes to that matchup is as easy a decision as there is in wrestling.
