College FB Fight Club: Top 25 Preview
Why?
Because the college kids are so much fun to watch.
Here's a preview of this weekend's Top 25 action...
#1 USC vs. Washington
Last season, the Trojans underestimated some teams. This year, USC is taking no one lightly.
With Oregon and Cal hot on their tail, the Trojans have to win. The Huskies, meanwhile, are just as dangerous as any other team in the Pac-10.
Remember that it was Washington that snapped Boise State's winning streak a few weeks ago, so they know how to shock the nation. Ty Willingham has his team ready for a shootout. Expect a close one in Seattle.
Final Score: Trojans 38, Huskies 31
#2 LSU vs. Tulane
Tulane can hang with most teams...but not the Bayou Bengals. LSU looks too determined to drop an easy one before they entertain the Florida Gators.
The LSU offense will destroy Tulane before halftime. The defense should keep them at bay in the second half. The Tigers win this one...and win it big.
Look for LSU to make a run at No. 1 in next week's polls.
Final Score: Tigers 54, Wave 14
#3 Oklahoma vs. Colorado
The Sooners have made the most noise of any top team this season. The Buffs are at .500—but blew out Miami (OH) 42-0 last weekend.
Everyone talks about the OU offense, but the defense can't be ignored. Oklahoma has kept the likes of Tulsa and Miami in check, so Colorado QB Cody Hawkins will have his work cut out for him.
Remember that Colorado played spoiler to Oklahoma a few years back by handing them the loss that should've kept them out of the national title game. The Sooners should win here, but anything can happen in Folsom Prison.
Final Score: Sooners 54, Buffaloes 27
#4 Florida vs. Auburn
The Gators barely escaped Mississippi with a win...which means that the Gators have to get better, fast.
That said, Tim Tebow is on fire, and the defense is coming together at the right time. The Tigers are looking to play spoiler, but they picked the wrong team and the wrong place.
In the Swamp, no one comes out alive.
Final Score: Gators 56, Tigers 17
#5 West Virginia vs. #18 South Florida
Arguably the game of the week. The Mountaineers want to prove that they're a powerhouse in the Big East, but they'll have a huge order on their plate on Friday night.
The Bulls are undefeated for a reason. A win over West Virginia will surely put them in the Top 10—and earn them some mention as title contenders.
I haven't picked a big upset this season, but I will this time. I think the Bulls have enough firepower to gore the Mountaineers. If you want a nail-biter, this is it.
Final Score: Bulls 31, Mountaineers 27
#6 Cal vs. #11 Oregon
Another huge game. One of these teams could derail the Trojans for ownership of the Pac-10.
The Bears got back to their old form last week with a convincing win over Arizona, and the Ducks used the ground-and-pound style to dispatch Stanford. Dennis Dixon and DeSean Jackson will both take care of business, but look for the Ducks to crack the Top 10 with an upset.
Don't worry, though, Bears...you can still beat USC.
Final Score: Ducks 45, Bears 35
Kansas State vs. #7 Texas
Texas woke up and won big last week, and not much can be said about Kansas State. The Longhorns last conference-opening loss was to these Wildcats a few years back.
Colt McCoy will have to step his game up in Big XII play. Texas wants to be undefeated against Oklahoma. They shouldn't have a problem here—but then again, this is Texas.
Anything's possible.
Final Score: Horns 27, Wildcats 10
#8 Ohio State vs. Minnesota
The Buckeyes are coming together at the right time. This game won't be as good as advertised—Ohio State wins with a quarterback no one believes in and a defense that's as good as any in the nation.
The Gophers should just hope they don't get too embarrassed.
Final Score: Buckeyes 31, Gophers 7
Michigan State vs. #9 Wisconsin
After several close calls, the Badgers face a severe challenge in the revived Spartans.
This could be the game that makes or breaks Wisconsin. If the upset gods have anything to say about it, Michigan State could send the Badger faithful home in tears.
If Wisconsin wants to win, they need to follow one simple rule: Give the ball to PJ and block.
Final Score: Badgers 30, Spartans 24
Maryland vs. #10 Rutgers
The Scarlet Knights have shown they can handle the pressure at the top. The Terrapins are taking wins any way they can.
There isn't much to say about this game except that the ACC isn't as strong as they used to be. The Big East wins this one, and the ACC loses another one.
Final Score: Scarlet Knights 49, Terrapins 10
#12 Boston College vs. UMass
Final Score: Eagles 30, UMass 3
#13 Clemson vs. Georgia Tech
Final Score: Yellow Jackets 24, Tigers 21
Florida Atlantic vs. #14 Kentucky
Final Score: Wildcats 49, Owls 3
Ole Miss vs. #15 Georgia
Final Score: Bulldogs 23, Rebels 14
Mississippi State vs. #16 South Carolina
Final Score: Cocks 24, Bulldogs 14
North Carolina vs. #17 Virginia Tech
Final Score: Hokies 27, Tar Heels 10
#19 Hawaii vs. Idaho
Final Score: Warriors 34, Vandals 7
#21 Penn State vs. Illinois
Final Score: Nittany Lions 30, Illini 10
#22 Alabama vs. Florida State
Final Score: Crimson Tide 24, Seminoles 10
#23 Arizona State vs. Stanford
Final Score: Sun Devils 20, Cardinals 3
#24 Cincinnati vs. San Diego State
Final Score: Bearcats 27, Aztecs 10
Iowa State vs. #25 Nebraska
Final Score: Huskers 34, Cyclones 21
That's the rundown, ladies and gents. Enjoy the weekend...
