Joey Gallo Recalled from Double-A Frisco by Rangers

Joseph ZuckerJun 1, 2015

Texas Rangers top prospect Joey Gallo is bringing his prodigious power to Major League Baseball.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels revealed Monday on 105.3 The Fan's The Ben and Skin Show in Dallas that Texas will call up Gallo from the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, per Ben Rogers of 105.3 The Fan.

The 21-year-old third baseman/outfielder is widely considered one of the best prospects in baseball. He's ranked ninth overall on MLB.com, sixth in Baseball America, 15th on Baseball Prospectus and 16th on FanGraphs.

Through 34 Double-A games in 2015, Gallo is hitting .314 and slugging .636 with nine home runs and 31 runs batted in. He emerged in a big way last year, as he hammered 42 home runs and drove in 106 runs in 126 games across the High-A and Double-A levels.

FanGraphs' Eno Sarris provided an idea of what to expect from Gallo at the major league level:

As ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick and NBC Sports' Matthew Pouliot noted, though, the promising star might be a bit feast or famine at the plate initially:

Gallo represented the United States at last year's Futures Game. His two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth provided the difference in a 3-2 win.

His batting practice session before the game became the stuff of legend, as he put on a show for all of those in attendance. He made sure to leave his mark, especially on this car that was on the Target Field concourse, per CBS Sports' Dave Brown:

Baseball Prospectus' Chris Crawford is hoping Gallo makes an appearance in this year's MLB Home Run Derby:

Unfortunately, Daniels also confirmed that Gallo likely won't remain with the Rangers for too long before going back to the minors, per Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

The plan for Texas will likely be to keep Gallo up until Adrian Beltre is healthy again. The veteran third baseman suffered a thumb injury Sunday, with the team announcing he'll miss at least two weeks.

Plans can change, but for all intents and purposes, it seems Gallo's stay in the majors will only be a brief cameo for now, offering Rangers fans a taste of what is to come down the line.
