UFC Fight Night 67 Results: Matches to Make for the Winners and Losers

Sean SmithJun 4, 2015

More than 14 months since he last appeared, Carlos Condit made a solid return on May 30 at UFC Fight Night 67, where he stopped Thiago Alves at the end of the second round.

Following a close opening stanza, Condit recorded a knockdown in the second frame that would ultimately result in a doctor stoppage between the second and third rounds. The Natural Born Killer smashed Alves' nose with an elbow; the injury could keep the Brazilian out of the Octagon for several months.

With the rebound win, Condit is back in the hunt for a shot at the welterweight championship. Having lost to Tyron Woodley prior to his hiatus, he does have some work to do in order to earn a title shot, though.

Here are the bouts that should be next for Condit and the rest of the UFC Fight Night 67 competitors.

Wendell Oliveira

2 of 13

Matchup: None (Release)

Things started out well for Wendell Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 67. The Brazilian arguably won the opening round of his bout with Darren Till, scoring 10 more significant strikes than his opponent.

However, in the second round, Oliveira ate a couple of big elbows and was knocked out. That leaves him with two knockout losses in his two UFC appearances.

If Oliveira had a bigger upside, maybe he'd get another chance inside the Octagon. However, he's 32 years old and isn't likely to improve drastically.

For that reason, it appears likely that the UFC will release him.

Darren Till

3 of 13

Matchup: Tom Breese

Following a T.J. Waldburger injury, Till was able to step in opposite Oliveira on short notice to make his UFC debut.

A promising 22-year-old with significant striking power, Till recorded his eighth career knockout win. Though he was still in Oliveira's guard, Till was able to generate enough force to put Oliveira away with a couple of strong elbows.

The future is bright for Till, but he'll have to work his way up from the bottom of the 170-pound division. A bout with fellow UFC newcomer and UFC Fight Night 67 winner Tom Breese is a possibility.

Norman Parke

4 of 13

Matchup: Diego Ferreira

At UFC Fight Night 67, Norman Parke made the mistake of getting into a competitive bout with a Brazilian on Brazilian soil.

The result was a controversial split-decision loss to Francisco Trinaldo. Although Parke scored four takedowns and appeared to win at least two rounds, according to most MMA media members, per MMA Decisions, he was named the loser on two official scorecards.

"

Media scores have been posted for Trinaldo/Parke: http://t.co/iKqCYUepeZ

— MMADecisions.com (@MMADecisions) May 31, 2015"

With two straight split-decision losses, Parke needs to get back into the win column soon. I wouldn't be surprised to see him meet an opponent coming off a loss, even though most feel he deserved the win over Trinaldo.

I'd like to see the UFC give Parke a chance to redeem himself against another Brazilian grappler, Diego Ferreira.

Francisco Trinaldo

5 of 13

Matchup: Matt Wiman

He needed some help from the judges, but Trinaldo picked up his third straight victory on Saturday.

Whether he deserved the win over Parke or not, he is putting together a nice little UFC career. The Brazilian has now picked up seven victories inside the Octagon and could have some big bouts coming his way if he's able to keep his streak going.

"

— FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) May 31, 2015"

Because his win was controversial, Trinaldo isn't going to be getting a ranked opponent next. He may, however, see a solid veteran like Matt Wiman.

Ryan Jimmo

6 of 13

Matchup: Ilir Latifi vs. Hans Stringer Loser

Following a loss to Ovince Saint Preux, Ryan Jimmo met Francimar Barroso in a bout that he was widely expected to win.

However, he couldn't get much going offensively, and his opponent shut him down along the cage. Although he stuffed all 14 Barroso takedown attempts, Jimmo was constantly on the defensive, resulting in a decision loss.

"

— Patrick Wyman (@Patrick_Wyman) May 22, 2015"

Because he's been so outspoken about UFC fighter treatment, I wouldn't be at all shocked if the UFC releases Jimmo. If he does get another UFC bout, though, he should meet the loser of a July contest between Ilir Latifi and Hans Stringer.

Francimar Barroso

7 of 13

Matchup: Thiago Santos vs. Steve Bosse Winner

Despite losing to Hans Stringer in his previous outing, Barroso received a perceived step up in competition against Jimmo.

While he was an underdog, Barroso shut his opponent down in the clinch. The Brazilian couldn't score a takedown despite continued attempts, but his efforts to do so were among the little offense in the bout and helped him to a decision win.

Barroso is now 2-1 inside the Octagon, but his win over the weekend was underwhelming. A big step up in competition is not forthcoming for him.

Instead, he could meet the loser of an upcoming bout between Thiago Santos and Steve Bosse.

K.J. Noons

8 of 13

Matchup: Pascal Krauss

K.J. Noons has had a good amount of success in the lightweight division, but he opted to compete at 170 pounds this past weekend.

Originally booked to compete against Yan Cabral, Noons ultimately faced replacement opponent Alex Oliveira. Though Oliveira hadn't proved himself at a high level, he was able to take Noons down and lock up a submission in the opening round.

"

That was K.J. Noons' first submission loss since his second pro fight in 2002. Nice feat for Oliveira on top of winning on 11 days' notice.

— Mike Bohn (@MikeBohnMMA) May 31, 2015"

A former professional boxer, Noons matches up better with strikers. There's a chance he could move back down to 155 pounds, but he should face Pascal Krauss if he does remain at welterweight.

Alex Oliveira

9 of 13

Matchup: Zak Cummings vs. Antonio Braga Neto Winner

Following a loss to Gilbert Burns in his UFC debut, Oliveira rebounded in a big way by submitting former Elite XC champion Noons.

— MMAjunkie (@MMAjunkie) May 31, 2015"

At 27 years old, Oliveira is entering his prime, so this could be the start of some big things for the Brazilian. Before he sees a big step up in competition, though, he is going to have to prove himself against a better grappler.

The winner of an upcoming bout between Zak Cummings and Antonio Braga Neto would be a good opponent for Oliveira's next contest.

Nik Lentz

10 of 13

Matchup: Ricardo Lamas

Nik Lentz is slowly shaking the once widely held feeling that he is a boring fighter.

At UFC Fight Night 67, Lentz and Charles Oliveira engaged in a highly entertaining bout. While The Carny was submitted in the third round, he put on a show and once again proved he can compete with elite featherweight opponents.

"

Also, I don't want to hear anyone say @NikLentz is boring again. The guy hasn't had a boring fight in years. Very exciting fighter at 145lbs

— Adam Martin (@MMAdamMartin) May 31, 2015"

He will compete against an opponent coming off a loss in his next outing, but don't expect Lentz to see a big drop in competition level. Instead, the UFC could reward him for his Fight of the Night performance with a matchup against Ricardo Lamas.

Charles Oliveira

11 of 13

Matchup: Max Holloway

With four straight wins, including three submissions, Oliveira is starting to look like the title threat most thought he could be when he joined the UFC roster.

Having recorded eight UFC wins, he is now experienced but still remains only 25 years old. So, the Brazilian has the potential to be a factor in the 145-pound title picture for years.

"

Charles Oliveira has earned 9 fight-night bonuses for a reported $445,000 during his UFC career. Not bad for 25-year-old with 13 UFC fights.

— Mike Bohn (@MikeBohnMMA) May 31, 2015"

Another rising star, Max Holloway, has won six in a row in the featherweight division. To determine which youngster is more ready for a shot at the belt, Oliveira and Holloway should meet in the coming months.

Thiago Alves

12 of 13

Matchup: Tarec Saffiedine

Coming off a knockout win over Jordan Mein, Alves looked like he might be ready to return to the title-shot conversation in the welterweight division.

However, he ran into perennial contender Carlos Condit at UFC Fight Night 67. The matchup left Alves with a busted nose and his first loss since March 2012.

"

Thiago Alves' broken nose will require surgery (@guicruzzz) http://t.co/Ho99CkTy5S pic.twitter.com/ZhOitBabmd

— MMAFighting.com (@MMAFighting) May 31, 2015"

Alves' next bout will depend on his recovery from surgery. However, if they happen to be ready at around the same time, Alves and Tarec Saffiedine would likely put on an outstanding kickboxing match.

Carlos Condit

13 of 13

Matchup: Matt Brown vs. Tim Means Winner

On the sidelines for 14 months, Condit was a big question mark heading into UFC Fight Night 67.

The Natural Born Killer got right back to doing what he does best, though. After a close opening round, he took over the second stanza, breaking Alves' nose and forcing a doctor stoppage as the frame came to an end.

"

Congrats @CarlosCondit pic.twitter.com/krBhQZkDbe

— Roy Nelson (@roynelsonmma) May 31, 2015"

Condit is going to need another win or two before he gets for another title shot, but there are some interesting matchups out there for him. A bout with Matt Brown, assuming he beats Tim Means in July, would pit two of the most violent fighters in the UFC against each other.
