Notable Early Results from Friday's Action

Federer Cruises

Federer made easy work of Damir Dzumhur on Friday, beating him 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16. Federer has looked great through three matches and seems primed for another deep run at Roland Garros. He has still won just one French Open in his illustrious career, but at 33 years old, he remains a factor.

Fed might be on a collision course with top-seeded Novak Djokovic in the final. First, Federer will face the winner of Gael Monfils vs. Pablo Cuevas in the fourth round.

Ivanovic Has No Trouble With Vekic

After dropping a set in each of her first two matches, No. 7 Ana Ivanovic made quick work of Donna Vekic on Friday. Her 6-0, 6-3 win took just 53 minutes, according to the Roland Garros Twitter account:

Ivanovic hasn't advanced past the fourth round since winning the event in 2008. She will meet No. 9 Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round. Makarova defeated Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-2 on Friday to punch her ticket to the round of 16.

Safarova Tops Lisicki

After winning the first set fairly easily, No. 13 Lucie Safarova was pushed to a tiebreaker in the second frame by No. 20 Sabine Lisicki. Ultimately, Safarova would prevail 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) to advance to the fourth round.

This equals the longest stay in the French Open for Safarova in her career. She also reached the round of 16 last year and in 2007. She will face the winner of the match between No. 26 Samantha Stosur vs. No. 2 Sharapova.
