Power Ranking Barcelona's 4 Champions League Victories

Jason PettigroveJun 3, 2015

Barcelona will go looking for a fifth Champions League when they take on Juventus in Berlin on Saturday night.

Against such talented opposition, the Catalans will need to be at their very best once again if they want to bring home the most prestigious trophy in European club football.

So far the Blaugrana have triumphed in London twice, in Rome and in Paris.

Let's take a look at how they emerged victorious in each one, ranking them in order of performance...

4. Paris 2006

The second of Barcelona's four Champions Leagues was a long time coming. Fourteen years to be exact.

In truth, Arsenal were there for the taking for much of the final after the sending off of Jens Lehmann in only the 18th minute.

With Robert Pires sacrificed so that Arsenal could use substitute goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, one of their most creative avenues had been closed.

However, the Blaugrana struggled for any sort of consistency in the first half of the game and it was little surprise when Sol Campbell headed the Gunners in front.

Frank Rijkaard responded at half time replacing Edmilson with Andres Iniesta and then on the hour mark Henrik Larsson took the place of Mark van Bommel.

Both substitutions had the desired effect with the Catalans probing incessantly until opportunities presented themselves.

Two goals in five minutes late in the game from Samuel Eto'o and Juliano Belletti knocked the stuffing out of Arsenal who weren't able to recover.

3. Wembley 1992

Barca's maiden European Cup victory at Wembley in 1992 will be remembered for Ronald Koeman's wonder strike late in extra time.

What's often forgotten is the superb defensive performance from Sampdoria. The Italians were more than a match for their Catalan opponents with Fausto Pari a particular thorn in Barca's side.

The story of the match was as expected.

Barcelona's dream team played the better football but Vujadin Boskov's side would not budge. A typical Italian masterclass if you prefer.

Koeman's strike when it came was like an arrow. Known for the pureness of his shots, the Dutchman found just about the only place that keeper Gianluca Pagliuca couldn't reach.

Game over.

2. Rome 2009

Barcelona arrived in Rome looking to complete the final leg of the treble, a first for any Spanish side.

Standing in their way were Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, themselves looking to make history by becoming the first team in the modern era to win back-to-back Champions League titles.

With Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes et al in their ranks, the English club would provide tough opposition and indeed how Barca survived a Red Devils onslaught in the first 10 minutes of the game is a mystery.

The Catalans simply didn't get going until a stroke of luck saw Samuel Eto'o beating Nemanja Vidic to the punch and steering the ball past a static Edwin van der Saar.

The goal seemed to lift Barca and although it would be another hour or so before Lionel Messi sent his looping header goalwards and kill the game off, Barca rarely looked in trouble with both Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta dictating play in midfield.

Both Iniesta and Thierry Henry were doubts for the final after picking up injuries in the lead-up to the match, but both played their part in the victory.

Carles Puyol too defended like his life depended on it and in the end Barca ran out worthy winners.

Two seasons later and Manchester United had the chance to avenge their defeat in Rome, and this time it would be on home soil.

Barcelona of course had fond memories of the venue but could lightning strike twice? Oh yes!

The Catalans were even better than they had been in 2009 and played the Red Devils off the park.

It was one of the great final performances in many a year. Even Alex Ferguson remarked at the time per Dominic Fifield of the Guardian:

"

They're the best in Europe, no question about that. In my time as a manager, I would say they're the best team we've faced. Everyone acknowledges that and I accept that.

It's not easy when you've been well beaten like that to think another way. No one has given us a hiding like that. It's a great moment for them. They deserve it because they play the right way and enjoy their football.

"

That one game was quite probably the pinnacle for Pep Guardiola. The 3-1 final score doesn't do justice to just how comprehensive a victory this was for the Blaugrana.
