Recap
Another day at the French Open, another top player in the women's draw biting the dust.
On Thursday, it was No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki who fell in straight sets to Julia Goerges, joining a growing list of contenders that have bowed out early in this tournament. She wasn't alone, of course. No. 12 Karolina Pliskova and No. 18 Svetlana Kuznetsova both fell as well.
That continues to make the path for No. 1 seed Serena Williams a bit easier, though Williams struggled on Thursday, losing the first set to Anna-Lena Friedsam, 7-5, though she recovered to win her next two sets by a 6-3 margin.
The concern for Williams will continue to be the elbow that limited her in the lead-up to this tournament. Williams at 100 percent is tough for the field to handle, but Williams at anything less than 100 percent is vulnerable, especially with a very tough matchup against Victoria Azarenka looming in the third round.
No. 4 Petra Kvitova, No. 10 Andrea Petkovic, No. 16 Madison Keys and No. 17 Sara Errani all joined Williams in the third round, while young United States hopeful Sloane Stephens also advanced.
But the match of the day on the women's side was Francesca Schiavone's epic 6-7 (11-13), 7-5, 10-8 victory over Kuznetsova. Tom Perrotta of the Wall Street Journal has more on the marathon match:
On the men's side of things, the upsets weren't so plentiful, at least not among the biggest names. Top stars like No. 1 Novak Djokovic, No. 3 Andy Murray, No. 6 Rafael Nadal, No. 7 David Ferrer and No. 9 Marin Cilic all won, with only Murray needing a fourth set to get the job done.
No. 16 John Isner wasn't so lucky, however, falling to Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. He joined No. 18 Tommy Robredo, No. 22 Philipp Kohlschreiber and No. 27 Bernard Tomic as some of the notable seeded players in the men's draw to be upset on Thursday.
American Jack Sock continued his impressive tournament, meanwhile, surviving a stiff challenge from Pablo Carreno Busta and moving on to the third round with a 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) victory. Up next is Borna Coric, who upset Robredo on the day, a matchup Sock should feel he can win.
Friday should be another exciting day, with No. 2 Roger Federer, No. 2 Maria Sharapova (facing No. 26 Sam Stosur), No. 4 Tomas Berdych, No. 7 Ana Ivanovic, No. 8 Stan Wawrinka, No. 8 Carla Suarez Navarro (against No. 28 Flavia Pennetta), No. 9 Ekaterina Makarova (vs. No. 21 Garbine Muguruza), No. 11 Angelique Kerber, No. 12 Gilles Simon, No. 13 Gael Monfils (facing No. 21 Pablo Cuevas), No. 13 Lucie Safarova (against No. 20 Sabine Lisicki) and No. 14 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga all in action.
Some very good players are going to be eliminated from the competition on Friday. Of course, the French Open has been so unpredictable to this point that many top players have already been eliminated in shocking fashion, a trend that could continue on Friday.
