Uruguay Considers Luis Suarez Biting Appeal After FIFA Corruption Investigations

Mark PattersonMay 28, 2015

The corruption allegations and investigations against FIFA officials would appear to have far-reaching consequences—but opening the door for Luis Suarez's biting ban to be reviewed is probably not the first thing that springs to mind.

The Uruguayan Footballers' Union (MUFP), however, sees it as an opportunity to take a fresh look at Suarez's suspension for biting Giorgio Chiellini at last summer's World Cup.

Suarez was banned for four months from all football-related activities, which meant a delayed start to his Barcelona career despite the case being appealed at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

At international level, however, the ban is for nine competitive international games, which means he will not appear in this summer's Copa America.

The MUFP is quoted by the Daily Mirror as suggesting the accusations against FIFA make it unfit to dispense a punishment: "If Luis Suarez is in agreement, we will ask for the end of the suspension...due to [the player] having been suspended by an organ suspected of corruption."

Whether the case would have any strength, as the punishment has already been upheld by the CAS, is another question, but it does illustrate that FIFA's position as an arbiter of the international game could be under threat from many angles.
