French Open 2015: Twitter Reacts to Wednesday's Bracket Results, Scores, Winners

Superstars dominated Wednesday's storylines at the 2015 French Open, although they didn't all dominate on the actual court.

While mainstays such as Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova cruised through to the third round, No. 3 seed Simona Halep saw her trip to Roland Garros end much earlier than anticipated at the hands of a familiar foe.

The full results from Wednesday’s action can be found here, courtesy of the event’s official website. The updated men’s draw can be found here, and the updated women’s draw can be found here, also courtesy of the event’s official website.

The most important development from Wednesday's full slate of action happened when Mirjana Lucic-Baroni upset Halep. Lucic-Baroni knocked Halep out of the 2014 U.S. Open and established herself as a full-on thorn in Halep's side with another Grand Slam upset.

It wasn't just the upset that made headlines, but the way she accomplished it. She dominated the tempo with powerful forehands and had the favored Halep scrambling for most of the match. Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times noted that Halep had something to do with Lucic-Baroni's timely power:

In all, Lucic-Baroni hit 29 winners to Halep’s five, and the world's No. 3-ranked player discussed her disappointment, per Rothenberg“I have to play like what I feel on court and just to be like, to create the game. So I started to hit the ball too strong, and that is not my style. I don’t feel it, and I don’t handle it. So I have to go back, you know, in my game and just to train again how I did till now.”

Federer suffered no such fate on the way to his second consecutive straight-sets victory. This one came over Marcel Granollers, 6-2, 7-6, 6-1. Roland Garros noted that the 17-time Grand Slam winner has succeeded on clay this year and also passed along what was arguably the most impressive shot of the afternoon:

The fact that Federer cruised through the first two matches is encouraging for his fans because it will allow him to stay relatively fresh before the later rounds. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray are all on the same half of the bracket, which means Federer should theoretically have a much easier path to the championship than the other superstars.

One opponent Federer may face before the finals is No. 5 Kei Nishikori, who handled Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets Wednesday, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. The rising star commented on his performance, while IMG Academy passed along an incredible winner:

Elsewhere on the men's side, Stanislas Wawrinka survived a test from Dusan Lajovic in four sets, 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Despite the win, Wawrinka only landed 44 percent of his first serves and ended up with nine double-faults.

Sports Illustrated Tennis noted that Wawrinka will attempt to play spoiler against former NCAA champion and Cinderella story Steve Johnson in the next round:

As for the marquee women, Ana Ivanovic and Sharapova staved off upset bids on the same day Halep went home. Ivanovic fought off a grueling battle from Misaki Doi, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Sharapova cruised to a straight-sets victory over Vitalia Diatchenko, 6-3, 6-1.

While Ivanovic ultimately dropped that first set and had to play comeback, Rothenberg was impressed with her ability to overcome the early hole:

Sharapova did not need a comeback Wednesday and is now in prime position after Halep's loss. However, the defending champion must face a dangerous Samantha Stosur in the third round. Stosur is the No. 26 seed and has not lost a set at Roland Garros this year.

Stosur also counts two head-to-head victories over Sharapova in her career (although she also has 14 losses in their 16 showdowns) and is playing impressive tennis in the French Open. Sharapova discussed the impending matchup, per Roland Garros:

While Sharapova's ultimate goal is to lift the trophy for the second consecutive year, she cannot afford to look past Stosur toward a potential finals matchup with Serena Williams.
