French Open 2015: Wednesday Results, Highlights, Scores Recap from Roland Garros
Wednesday marked the start of the second round at Roland Garros as the 2015 French Open rolls on. While most of the big names that were in action managed to advance, a couple seeded players were sent packing from the season's second major.
Simona Halep, the No. 3 seed on the women's side, was the most notable of them. She entered the tournament as one of the top contenders alongside Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. Mirjana Lucic-Baroni ensured her wait to win a Grand Slam event continues.

Wednesday Recap
The aforementioned Sharapova continued her quest to repeat in Paris with a comfortable victory over Vitalia Diatchenko. Although she lost just four games, there were some mistakes to clean up, including five double-faults, before the business end of the tournament.
Halep wasn't as fortunate. After reaching the final in this event last year, she was ousted in two pretty routine sets by Lucic-Baroni. The underdog was able to generate eight break-point opportunities and converted five of them. She also held a massive winners edge, 29-5, over the third seed.
Roland Garros provided the winner's take on the current state of her game:
Jon Wertheim of Sports Illustrated commented on Halep's play on the biggest stages:
Among the other notable results on the women's side, 2008 champion Ana Ivanovic fought back from a set down to edge Misaki Doi. Her play in Grand Slam tournaments has been highly erratic since that first major win, but she can thrive on this surface if she finds top form.
Carla Suarez Navarro and Ekaterina Makarova were the other top-10 seeds to advance.
Roger Federer highlighted the men's group in action on Wednesday. He owns just one French Open title among his 17 majors, mostly due to the dominance of Rafael Nadal on the clay surface. But the draw sets up favorably for him this year.
He swept away Marcel Granollers in straight sets to reach the third round. It was an interesting outing for Federer, who had 38 winners but also 34 unforced errors. He'll obviously be looking to improve that ratio in the next couple rounds.
Carl Bialik of FiveThirtyEight noted the Swiss sensation was pulling out all the tricks without his A-game available today:
The other members of the projected quarterfinals in the bottom half of the draw also advanced. It's a group that includes Federer's countryman, Stan Wawrinka, as well as Tomas Berdych and Kei Nishikori.
One of the seeded players to exit on Wednesday was Ernests Gulbis. The 26-year-old Latvian has always flashed a lot of potential but hasn't been able to take that next step to compete in majors consistently. He's advanced beyond the second round just four times since 2007.
Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times noted how far Gulbis' ranking will fall since he wasn't able to defend the points from his semifinal appearance one year ago:
Fan favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga quietly moved on to the third round as well. He's been dominant through two rounds and could be a sleeper in the bottom half while playing on home soil.
The second round will continue on Thursday with the top half of both draws. Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Nadal will all be in action on a star-studded fifth day of play.
Some top matches outside of that group are Caroline Wozniacki taking on Julia Goerges and Francesca Schiavone against Svetlana Kuznetsova on the women's side. In the men's draw, American John Isner will battle Jeremy Chardy while Jerzy Janowicz tries to rediscover his mojo against Leonardo Mayer.
It should all add up to another entertaining day at Roland Garros.
