What To Look Out For In Tonight's Jets Vs. Eagles Game

David WyattSep 3, 2009

I always enjoy the fourth preseason game in the NFL, a lot of people will watch the first quarter and then switch over, the this game is probably the most entertaining of all the preseason games.

This season it was a little bit different, with the golden boy now in New York, every preseason game was watched, scrutinized, re-watched and then scrutinized some more. The important of the tune ups was enhanced with a new coach, a new QB and a whole new attitude.

Well tonight the Jets take the field against Michael Vick and the Philidelphia Eagles, the final chance for some players to prove that they are worth a spot on the final roster, and a game played at 100 percent throughout.

There are some interesting stories tonight that I will be following while watching the game, and here are just a few things that I personally will be looking out for from tonight's contest:

I know, broken record, cut out the power. Like it or not the receiver position is a big deal right now with this team, we have one set in stone, being Cotchery, one pretty much guaranteed to start opposite him in Stuckey, and then a handful of question marks with 3 and a half quarter to find the answer.

Tonight we are looking for that third wide receiver, the lead seems to be in David Clowney's (Pictured) favor, the impressive pre-season phenom will need to show that he can take it to the next level, consistently catch passes over the course of the game. I have very little doubt that he can do this, he is my pick for the third receiver spot but he will face competition.

Brad Smith the converted quarterback and the trick pony on the Jets will try and show that he can be more than a end around reverse luxury.

Wallace Wright and Aundrae Allison will be trying to show that the Jets have the answers already and need not look elsewhere for help at the receiver position. Britt David and Marcus Hendry are the outsiders, both having trouble bringing the ball in.

The back-up offensive line will need to step up to the plate, give Clemens and Ainge the protection that they need, I'm specifically looking at tackle Wayne Hunter and Robert Turner, both of whom stepped in earlier in the pre-season with the Jets struggling to stay healthy on the offensive line, and both seeming to struggle with the quickness of the opposing defence, Turner being responsible for a sack against the Rams.

Vernon Gholston, I just can't get through a preview article without mentioning number 50. He showed good signs against the Giants and will need to improve on that performance to give Jets fans confidence going into the season opener.

Although both the offence first and defence firsts are only expected to play one series, there are rumours that suggest that Gholston will play a little bit longer. He needs the reps and if getting to the quarterback and stuffing some runs build his confidence then I can understand keeping him out for longer tonight.

He will be joined by Calvin Pace who will come in with the seconds and play opposite Gholston. Pace being suspended until Week 5 needs to get as much work in as possible before having to take to the sidelines to watch his team. Both will rotate with impressive rookie Jamaal Westerman.

Defensive end will be a position to watch out for tonight, with Mike DeVito struggling for fitness, we will need to get a good look at some of his potential replacements week one. Although DeVito has promised to be fit to face the Texans, you never can be too sure with hamstring injuries, they do have a tendency to linger.

Zack Potter, Ropati Pitoitua and Ty Steinkuhler will all be playing for a place on this team. They will have there work cut out with them with Michael Vick taking snaps into the half.

The defensive backs have everything to play for, Marquice Cole could well be pushing Drew Coleman for the final cornerback spot, at the very least he is playing for a practise squad place.

Carrol seems to have a spot wrapped up and the safeties seem to pick themselves with Rhodes/Leonhard/Smith and Inhedigbo taking the spots, but look for hard hitting Emannuel Cook to make some noise tonight, he has talent, but can he put it all together.

It should be a facinating game, and then following that game we have the Oregon @ Boise State game. Football is finally back, and I'm looking forward to really getting started.
