French Open 2015 Results: Winners, Scores, Stats from Monday's Singles Bracket

Steven CookMay 25, 2015

Those searching for early chaos and exciting play at the 2015 French Open finally got what they wanted on Monday in the continuation of first-round action.

While there weren't any seismic upsets, Monday's action at least produced more thrilling contests than Sunday's opening day that featured only one men's singles match that wasn't decided in straight sets. As for the continuance of the first round on Memorial Day, not all of the top seeds were safe and many others got tested considerably.

Two days out of the three-day first round are in the books, so let's take a glance at all of the biggest scores and dive right into the marquee matchups.

No. 3 Andy Murray def. Facundo Arguello

Third-seeded star Andy Murray has entered Roland Garros in dangerous form and looks more likely than ever to make a run for his first French Open title. He began in style with a straight-set dispatching of Facundo Arguello.

Murray was never truly tested amid a 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 victory in the last of four matches on the Philippe-Chatrier Court, winning in his first ever meeting with the 22-year-old who was fresh off three qualifying wins. It further continued Murray's perfect run on clay courts this year, as told by BBC Tennis:

Murray was his usual dominant self on the first serve, completing the point on 83 percent of his initial services. He only produced five aces, but he didn't need many as he remained in control of the net play. Winning six of eight break points, Murray was virtually unbeatable with so much of a talent gap between him and his opponent.

While Murray only notched 21 winners, he didn't have to go out of his comfort zone with Arguello committing 40 unforced errors.

Up next for the third seed is a meeting with either Canadian Vasek Pospisil or Portuguese contender Joao Sousa, the latter of whom Murray is 5-0 all-time against. And after not showing any worrisome signs in his Round 1 action, Murray should be expected to reign supreme there as well.

No. 2 Maria Sharapova def. Kaia Kanepi

As if the draw for Maria Sharapova wasn't tough enough in having to face Kaia Kanepi in Round 1, the No. 2 seed received another setback with an illness just prior to her Roland Garros opener. It kept her down but far from out as she overcome adversity and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Even getting out to the court proved to be a tough task for Sharapova in the midst of a bad cold, but it wasn't about to keep the 2014 French Open champion from attempting to defend her crown, per ESPN.com's Jim Caple:

From the get-go, it became apparent that Sharapova wasn't at her typical best. She hit just 17 winners during the contest and attacked the net only five times, winning the point on one occasion.

But by winning 23 of her 32 first serves and more than 50 percent of her receiving points, Sharapova's superior quality had no trouble shining through amid her illness. Although it wasn't the proper timing, overcoming such an issue is a familiar feeling for Sharapova, as per tennis journalist Carole Bouchard:

That illness certainly didn't slow down Sharapova last year as she won her second title at Roland Garros, but it's impossible to ignore—even amid the straight-set win—that she didn't look like the same player Monday. That's to be expected if she is dealing with an illness, but is certainly something to keep an eye on moving forward.

For now, Sharapova doesn't look intent on letting her physical nature get to her on the court. Assuming the cold doesn't subside, she'll attempt to overcome those obstacles again in the second round against fellow Russian Vitalia Diatchenko.

Sloane Stephens def. No. 15 Venus Williams

For anyone who witnessed the wild ride of Sloane Stephens in her breakout 2013 Australian Open that included a win over No. 1 Serena Williams, it wasn't hard to infer what may happen with Stephens facing another Williams sister in Round 1.

Although Stephens was plagued by inconsistency throughout last season, she returned to her exhilarating best by convincingly beating No. 15 Venus Williams in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, for arguably the day's most impressive upset.

Stephens was tested in the opening set, where Venus took her to a back-and-forth tiebreak only to drop it 7-5. Coming up short in set No. 1 seemed to crush Venus, who only won a single game in the second and final set.

Venus can only blame herself, after committing 30 unforced errors to Stephens' 14. She leveled the playing field as expected by dominating at the net (14-of-17), but the 15th seed couldn't muster up the early success that she found at the year's first Grand Slam in Melbourne.

Impressive winners like this gave Stephens plenty of reason to pump her fists, per the Roland Garros Twitter account:

After beating the second of two Williams sisters, the fellow American wasn't shy in her praise for the two women's tennis greats, per Jonathan Newman of SportScribe:

Forget just breaking out as an American tennis star—finding success against the Williams sisters is a necessity for any young women's tennis player to make the rise to stardom. Few, if any, of those up-and-comers can say that they have beaten both of them in their careers.

Stephens will face off in a thrilling Round 2 matchup with British hotshot Heather Watson, which should produce one dangerous contender for deep in the draw. But for now, Stephens may just want to bask in her incredible victory from Monday.
