Roger Staubach Comments on Greg Hardy, Says He Wouldn't Want Abuser as Teammate

Tim DanielsMay 23, 2015

Dallas Cowboys legend Roger Staubach stated during a radio interview this week that if he were making decisions for the organization, Greg Hardy wouldn't be on the roster.

The Dallas Morning News passed along comments the former quarterback made during an appearance on KTCK-AM with Norm Hitzges. He discussed the signing of Hardy, who missed most of last season while going through a domestic violence case:

"

Well, it depends on getting a chance to understand the red flags ... like the Hardy situation. Charlotte Jones is fantastic. She's involved with the NFL on the committees. I think she had a hand in trying to understand that this guy deserves a second chance. I don't have any tolerance toward domestic violence. If I was making the decision, it probably wouldn't have been good for the Cowboys.

He went on to say those type of decisions are often difficult. He believes the Jones family and head coach Jason Garrett are trying to make the right calls while also building a championship contender. He just disagrees in this instance.

Staubach noted he wouldn't like being on the same team with certain players based on their backgrounds:

"

Back in the old days, there were some issues. But we never really had a domestic violence, smoking marijuana or ... I'm sure it happened though, we just didn't know about it. I would have really had a hard time with a teammate that you look at as a courageous, tough guy on the football field ... to abuse a woman in any shape or form, there's just no excuse for it.

"

The Cowboys knew public backlash was going to come after signing Hardy. Hearing it from somebody who's been linked with the franchise for more than four decades takes it to another level, though. He thinks the team made the wrong call.

The NFL has since suspended Hardy for 10 games for conduct detrimental to the league. The decision came despite the case being dismissed in February after the accuser stopped cooperating with authorities.

Staubach's voice holds weight throughout the Cowboys fanbase. But what matters most is how Hardy's teammates feel about the situation moving forward.
