The New Day Should Keep the Tag Team Titles Past WWE Elimination Chamber

Sebastian MaldonadoMay 21, 2015

Who would’ve thought The New Day would get its gimmick working as bad guys?

The trio of Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E changed its hero ways and took the tag team titles from Cesaro and Tyson Kidd. The stable has embraced its heel persona well.

The deck is stacked against it this time, however. The New Day managed to beat Cesaro and Kidd in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match at Payback. It cheated, with Woods—who wasn't even supposed to be in the matchgetting the pin over Cesaro in the last fall.

Big E and Kingston were the team going into the bout. Woods took the place of an incapacitated Kingston and rolled up Cesaro for the three-count.

As a result, WWE set up The New Day to defend its titles at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view. Five other teams will vie for The New Day’s tag titles. Cesaro and Kidd, The Lucha Dragons, Los Matadores, The Ascension and The Prime Time Players will challenge The New Day come May 31 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

All six teams will be locked inside, as the tag titles will be defended for the first time inside the Elimination Chamber.

All 12 men will feel the unforgiving steel and be punished to new heights. However, it should be The New Day still standing as the remaining tag champs.

Think about the level of opportunity for these guys. They’re at a massive disadvantage. Whoever represents The New Day must survive five other teams at most—and they cannot use their sleight of hand in Woods/Kingston.

It’s all the more important to legitimize the stable now as a dominant threat. Defeating five tag teams in one night seems impossible, but it would prove the team's supremacy if it did.

It would also establish the tag team division for future stories. Sometimes the best wrestling stories involve the good guys chasing the heels and their titles, trying to make things right.

Four teams are babyfaces in this upcoming bout. Cesaro and Kidd are riding their fandom from WrestleMania 31. The Lucha Dragons were a hit in their debut the night after WrestleMania. The Prime Time Players, Darren Young and Titus O’Neil, are also gaining momentum after their recent resurgence.

Those are three teams WWE needs to capitalize on. If any challenging team took the titles from The New Day, then it would be too soon.

Los Matadores and The Ascension are good workers for this match. They have a chance to spotlight their talents as well.

This reminds me of the division 15 years ago. Everyone chased Edge and Christian for the tag titles. That long list of established teams included The Dudley Boyz, The Hardy Boyz, APA, T & A and Too Cool, just to name a few.

The tag team division grew from that point on. It hasn’t reached that high point since that era. Fast-forward to present day, when we can witness an opportunity to reach those heights again.

The tag team division needs that foundation to build itself back up again. The New Day is the perfect team for that. Frankly, it’s time for this team to establish itself as that dominant force at Elimination Chamber.

In closing, the only right decision is The New Day retaining the titles after Elimination Chamber.
