NFL Game Black Outs Should Be Lifted For One Season

Benny HsuSep 2, 2009

The Jacksonville Jaguars will most likely have all 8 of their regular season games at home blacked out this year. It's the first time it's happened in franchise history and it's disappointing.

Jaguar fans are known to love or hate their team. I know cause I live here. As a team with a small market and small history, fans aren't as passionate about the Jaguars as other cities are about their team.

This area has so much high school football talent, tons of college football fans, the "World's Largest Cocktail Party" every year (Florida vs Georgia), yet on Sundays it's tough to sell out home games.

This was even when the economy was still good!

So now with the economy being down and fans looking to save money, they're not going to want to pay to go watch the Jaguars play. It's understandable.

However, the Jaguars aren't the only ones going to have blacked out games this season. Other teams will have blacked out games, though not all of the home games like the Jaguars.

I understand why the NFL has the blackout rule, to sell tickets. If you can watch the game on TV, with a fridge full of beers, and your own bathroom, it makes you think twice about wanting to go to the actual game.

I wish though the NFL would step in and lift the blackout ban for maybe just this season. They have felt the negative impact of the economy in their own offices.

Going to an NFL game is entertainment and entertainment spending is down now. Taking a family of 4 to a football game will easily costs hundreds of dollars!

If fans were able to watch their home games all on TV, it would help grow the fan base for the future. Because at that time, the only game that would be on that channel is the home team.

I know that's important for the Jaguars who live in a small market. If they can't see the Jaguar games on TV, they're not going to care as much how they are doing week in and week out and in the future.

I doubt the NFL will lift the blackout rule for this season or ever. They're in the business to make money. The owners want to make money.

We all will watch football. It would just be nice to be able to watch our home team.
