Will the Race Be Devoid of Major Wrecks?

It's been a scary week at Indianapolis, as four different racers suffered pretty scary crashes. Last week, Helio Castroneves and Josef Newgarden went airborne and were lucky not to be seriously injured. On Sunday, Ed Carpenter's car flipped during the practice session. And then on Monday, James Hinchcliffe crashed and had to have surgery on his leg after a part of his car pierced it, ending his participation in the race.

It probably could have been much worse for Hinchcliffe, however, as Kevin Neghandi of ESPN tweeted:

The hope going into Sunday will be that any issues with the cars are ironed out and the race avoids any serious and scary crashes. Frankly, given some of the shocking crashes from the week, it's fortunate that there weren't any more devastating injuries. The race's organizers, participants and fans will be hoping there aren't any injuries at all on Sunday.

Can Helio Castroneves Make History?

Helio Castroneves has already won this race three times, and a fourth win would tie him for the most all time with A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears. And while he hasn't won since 2009, he has finished in the top 10 in 12 of the last 13 runnings of the Indianapolis 500, compiling a whopping nine top-five finishes in that time.

It's safe to say Castroneves enjoys his time in Indianapolis.

It also helps that he has four top-six finishes in his five races this year, so despite not having a win this year, he's been knocking on the door.

He's also just fortunate to be in this race, being one of the aforementioned riders to suffer a scary crash during the week. It would be one heck of an Indianapolis 500 if Castroneves went from such a scary crash to that long, iconic, fourth bottle of milk at the end of the race.

Will Scott Dixon Repeat His 2008 Triumph?

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - MAY 22: Scott Dixon, driver of the #9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, prepares to get in his car during final practice on Carb Day for the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 mile race at Indianapolis Motorspeedway on May 22, 20

The last time Scott Dixon won this race, which was in 2008, he sat on the pole, so starting atop the race for him this year is no small deal. Now, he's hoping to prove that history can repeat itself.

Dixon is having a solid season, having won the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, finishing third at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama and 10th at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis.

He's been an inconsistent racer at times, but his excellent showing this week leading to his pole win and his strong car look to have him in position to perhaps earn a second Indy 500 title. The competition is stiff, of course, but Dixon has to be one of the favorites.
