U.S. Open Tennis: 10 Notes on Day 1 and 2
MarkOskar RandmaaSep 1, 2009
The 2009 U.S. Open Tennis Championships are in full swing now and it's been a fun ride thus far. Despite the 2009 edition still being in its infancy, let's have a look at what is to note.
Heeeere's Johnny! I mean, onto the list!
- Ok, I'm annoyed, Canadian's (or anyone outside of the U.S. cannot watch the "Live" tennis from the U.S. Open website. While it's more complex than just flipping a switch, this stinks!
- I wish ticketmaster would evolve, somehow, to just provide a more intuitive site for tickets. It took me 20 minutes to check for various tickets in Arthur Ashe stadium, just to find that they are actually unavailable. Ughhh.
- While it'll provide more consistency in the long run, I'm really not a huge fan of Maria Sharapova's revamped service motion. It's lost all flow, creativity, and looks like a junior hack. Sharapova looks great however.
- Donald Young, where are you? First round loss for the "youngster", and it continues to look not so bright for Mr. Young.
- Federer-Hewitt in round three will be super, watch the schedule and tune into that one. Sure Federer has an overwhelming edge here, but we could have a great fight.
- Tsonga is looking ugly out there, and by ugly I mean dominant. First round, but that's a thrashing.
- Kanepi bows out in first round, the young Estonian player has lost in the first round (get this...) the last nine tournaments in a row. For a top-30 player, that's awfully awful.
- Dementieva Vs. Oudin in the second round. That is another super match-up, though I suspect the hot Dementieva will crush the very young American's hopes.
- It's a shame that Wozniaki is in the same quarter as Dementieva. I would love to see her in a quarter sans Serena or Elena at this point, and see where it goes. We all eye the monster-breakout, but where is it?
- I'm calling it well in advance folks. It's Nestor and Zimonjic to take the men's doubles following up on their thrilling Wimbledon title. Zimonjic played particularly well at Wimbledon, and he'll do it again. Danny Nestor is simply the best doubles specialist in the world, and the combo should see gold.
