Stanley Cup Playoffs 2015: TV, Live Stream Info for Capitals vs. Rangers Game 7

Steven CookMay 13, 2015

The only Game 7 of the conference semifinal round was saved for last, as the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals will battle in a do-or-die affair at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night.

The Presidents' Trophy winners took quite the unconventional path to get here, going down 3-1 in the series and coming within two minutes of elimination in Game 5. From that point on, the Rangers have willed their way back into the series and have pushed things to one final game.

Awaiting the winner are the Tampa Bay Lightning, who join the Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks as the only ones left standing for the Stanley Cup. Without further ado, let's look at everything to know for Game 7.

It's no secret that the Rangers have the edge entering Game 7, having battled back in resilient fashion from a 3-1 hole and returning to the confines of Madison Square Garden. But that's not the only thing tilting in New York's favor.

Just about every number you can find points toward the Rangers taking care of business. They're 9-0 in elimination games at the Garden dating back to 2008 and have won all six Game 7 contests they have hosted in the building.

As if that's not enough, the Capitals are historically poor in series-clinching situations. After dropping their last two opportunities (the last of which was at home), the Caps are now 3-11 in series-clinching opportunities.

To say that has Alex Ovechkin and Co. down on their chances, though, would be a straight-up lie. In fact, the Capitals captain went as far as to guarantee victory after the Game 6 defeat, per Katie Strang of ESPN.com:

"We're going to come back and win the series," Ovechkin told Strang. "We're going to play our game, and we're going to come back, and we're going to play Montreal or Tampa."

It's not hard to see why Washington would bring such confidence into Game 7 even after their last two losses. One goal has decided each of the six games in the series, continuing what has been an even rivalry over the last five seasons, per ESPN Stats & Info:

The Rangers have endured plenty of trouble generating goals through much of this series, producing just two goals throughout a nine-period stretch. But the emergence of Chris Kreider—three goals in the last two games, including a game-tying goal late in Game 5—in front of net has helped New York to regain its edge.

Braden Holtby has been the key to stopping the Rangers attack, but Game 6 marked just the first time in the series that his save percentage dropped below .900 in a game. If he's able to return to his form from earlier in the series, the Capitals should be in good shape.

But with Ovechkin and the Capitals facing another dreaded Game 7 and coming off his guarantee, there's no doubting that this is about No. 8 on Washington, per ESPN's John Buccigross:

The Rangers are just one victory away from a meeting with the Lightning in what would produce endless storylines between players that recently switched sides in the Martin St. Louis trade. But before they can worry about that, Ovechkin and crew have to be beaten one last time.
