WWE Payback 2015: Best Booking Decisions for Fatal 4-Way Main Event

Aaron BowerMay 12, 2015

WWE fans will finally get to see all three former members of The Shield lock horns in the same ring on pay-per-view this weekend, as WWE Payback has a fascinating main event in store for us.

Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins are all involved in the match, with Randy Orton's involvement creating what should be a captivating and enjoyable Fatal 4-Way main event.

With so much star power involved in the match, there are plenty of booking decisions that need to be made to ensure the match is a thrilling one. But what decisions in particular need to be made?

Dean Ambrose Must Remain Babyface

Although there might be temptation to turn one or even two of the men participating in the main event at Payback, one of them cannot be Dean Ambrose.

WrestlingInc.com noted last week that Ambrose being added to the pay-per-view at such short notice gives them the opportunity to turn The Lunatic Fringe heel, and while that certainly could be the case, it doesn't mean it should happen.

Granted, there is an imbalance in terms of top babyfaces and heels at the moment, with a distinct lack of main event heels floating around on the roster. Some would argue that Bray Wyatt could become a main event heel, but at the moment, he seems to be locked in the middle of the card.

WWE fans have clamoured for a push for Ambrose in recent months, probably ever since his initial feud with Seth Rollins came to an end.

We've started to see that in recent weeks, with Ambrose picking up a number of impressive victories. He still remains one of the most popular stars on the roster, so why turn him heel here?

This is not the time for Ambrose to turn. He's just starting to build up a head of steam, and he's over more than most babyfaces that are active at the moment.

Roman Reigns Becomes The Authority's New Target

For The Authority to continue to have significance in WWE storylines beyond Payback and heading towards SummerSlam, they need to find a notable foe standing in their way.

Seth Rollins and J&J Security are becoming more and more distinct from Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and Kane, which may well be no bad thing. It allows Triple H et al to become involved in their own feud moving toward SummerSlam.

And if booked right at Payback, there's no reason why it can't be Roman Reigns.

Reigns has moved on impressively recently, and that Last Man Standing match against Big Show at Extreme Rules was a contest that, in terms of quality, definitely caught everyone by surprise.

He's not yet ready for a run with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and the slow-burner approach is definitely the best path to take with Reigns.

Him squaring off with The Authority would be a good storyline to have running over the next few months.

Seth Rollins Retains, But Not Cleanly

There may be an argument in some quarters which suggests that Seth Rollins' many controversial victories do him no good in terms of his championship credentials.

After all, his win at WrestleMania was opportunistic, to say the least, and then at Extreme Rules, he benefited from some outside interference.

But even though Rollins isn't winning these matches in a standard, conventional fashion, it still helps to create an overall positive character for the defending champion.

As mentioned earlier in this article, the WWE is short of top heels at the moment. But Rollins is undoubtedly doing a great job of pulling off the role of the company's top heel, and his controversial wins are helping to play a part.

So with Kane clearly in two minds about whether to help Rollins again, as well as Triple H being back on WWE TV in time for Payback, more of the same would be apt here.

It would enable Rollins to keep gaining heat week on week, and it would ensure that The Authority's handpicked champion continues to rule supreme over the WWE.
