The conference semifinal series in the West are both over, but there's still plenty of work to be done in the East.

The Anaheim Ducks finished off the Calgary Flames 3-2 in overtime Sunday night when Corey Perry scored in the extra session on a goalmouth scramble. That allowed the powerful Ducks to end the Flames' season by defeating them in five games.

The Ducks have won eight of their nine playoff games, and they appear to be in top form. They will need to be, since they will face the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference Final. The Blackhawks swept the Minnesota Wild in a series that ended May 7.

The New York Rangers extended their series with the Washington Capitals to seven games after surviving a Washington rally and registering a 4-3 victory in Game 6. The Rangers jumped to a 4-1 lead Sunday night at Washington, but goals by Evgeny Kuznetsov and Joel Ward allowed the homestanding Caps to get close; however, goalie Henrik Lundqvist prevented any further damage.

The Montreal Canadiens got a late goal Saturday night from P.A. Parenteau, and that enabled the Habs to win their second straight game in the other Eastern Conference semifinal series. The 2-1 victory means the two teams will go back to Tampa to play Game 6 of the series Tuesday night.

Series to Watch: Washington Capitals vs. New York Rangers

The Rangers find themselves in a familiar position. A year ago, they were in a 3-1 hole to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the conference semifinal round, and it appeared the Penguins would finish them off without any trouble.

Instead, the Rangers rallied with three victories and advanced to the Eastern Conference Final.

The Rangers were in the same hole this year against the Washington Capitals after four games. Capitals goalie Braden Holtby appeared to have their number, as the Presidents' Trophy-winning Rangers were unable to solve the stellar netminder.

That didn't change until the final moments of Game 5. Trailing 1-0, the Rangers tied the game late in the third period and won it in overtime. The Rangers appeared to have momentum in Game 6, as Chris Kreider scored two first-period goals to give the Rangers the early lead at Washington. They held on at the Verizon Center, and that allowed the Rangers to get to a seventh game.

If the Rangers can win Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, they will survive and overcome a 3-1 deficit for the second year in a row.

The Caps have a dreary record in this situation. They have blown 3-1 series leads on four previous occasions, and if they can't hold off the Rangers, this would be the fifth. No NHL team has blown more 3-1 series leads than the Capitals.

The goaltending battle between Lundqvist (1.68 goals-against average and .940 save percentage) and Holtby (1.71 GAA and .944 save percentage) is one of the obvious keys to the finale, but there are several secondary battles.

The Caps have a tough, physical defense led by Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen, while the Rangers have a fast-skating team. Whichever team can assert their asset better will have the best chance of surviving.

Alex Ovechkin has not scored since the second game of the series. He did not appear to be much of a factor in Games 3, 4 and 5. He nearly tied Game 6 late in the third period, but Lundqvist stopped his bid.

The Rangers and their fans breathed a sigh of relief when Rick Nash scored in the third period of Game 6. He had been held off the scoreboard prior to that game. If he can make a big play early and get on the scoreboard in Game 7, that would go a long way toward helping the home team survive.
