Per Wimbley's post on TwitLonger.com, he said the decision to walk away now was motivated by a desire to be around his family:
"While I still feel like I could be competitive on the field, at this point in my life, my family is my priority. Although my wife and two young daughters have always been incredibly supportive of my career, I am looking forward to spending more meaningful time with them and never missing another big moment in their lives!
"
Wimbley, 31, was a first-round pick (13th overall) to the Cleveland Browns in 2006. He spent four seasons with the team, recording 26.5 sacks, before being traded to Oakland in 2010. He spent two years with the Raiders before signing a five-year deal with the Titans in 2012.
Last season was the worst of Wimbley's career. He appeared in a career-low 13 games with 12 starts and recorded just two sacks.
For his career, Wimbley had 53.5 sacks and two interceptions. His best season came as a rookie in 2006 with 11 sacks and three fumbles recovered. He walks away from the NFL with two years left on the deal he signed with the Titans in March 2012.
