Shaw Out of England Squad for U21 European Championships
Wednesday, May 20
England Under-21 head coach Gareth Southgate revealed injury had forced him to omit the Manchester United defender from his squad for the finals, as the official Football Association Twitter feed noted.
The England international, who completed a move to Old Trafford from Southampton last summer, was carried off against Crystal Palace on May 9.
The defender has not played since that injury and will now also miss this summer's Under-21 European Championships with England in the Czech Republic.
Shaw was one of the first new signings the club made during the summer and was widely viewed as one of the fastest-rising stars in English football. Much was expected from the 19-year-old during his first season, but so far, the teenager has failed to deliver.
Injuries have been the main reason for his lack of success. As reported by ESPN FC's Ben Dinnery, the defender is quickly becoming one of the most injury-prone players in the game:
Whether Shaw has just had some bad luck with injuries or the accumulation of knocks and bruises is a sign of an underlying problem is yet to be seen, but fans can't be happy to see the young full-back sitting on the sidelines once again. The youngster has much developing to do, and it's hard to evolve as a player if you can't play.
Shaw remains one of the most gifted young players in all of England, and one injury-stricken season won't change that. But the Red Devils surely hope the prolific defender will be able to stay healthier next season.
