IPL 2015 Results: Scores, Points Table, Schedule and More After May 5 Fixture

Matt JonesMay 5, 2015

Mumbai Indians moved into a playoff spot, as they picked up a vital five-wicket win over Delhi Daredevils at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

A quality knock from Yuvraj Singh helped Delhi recover after losing Mayank Agarwal off the first ball of the day. The India international scored 57 from 44 balls as the Daredevils posted a below-par 152 for six from their 20 overs.

It was a total Mumbai should have been confident chasing down, but they toiled badly to begin with. The Indians lost four wickets inside a rain-affected six overs, but they recovered well thanks to a superb knock from Ambati Rayudu and a late flourish from Kieron Pollard. Eventually, they knocked off the runs required with just three balls remaining.

Here’s a recap of the action from Mumbai and a look at how this win for Mumbai affects the overall standings.

Mumbai Edge Delhi in a Thriller

3 of 3

Mumbai Indians (153/5) beat Delhi Daredevils (152/6) by five wickets

After winning the toss and deciding to bat, Delhi Daredevils got off to the worst possible start in their match with Mumbai Indians.

Off the very first ball of the match, Mayank Agarwal was caught off the bowling of Lasith Malinga, handing Mumbai a massive dose of early momentum. When the impressive Shreyas Iyer (19) and skipper JP Duminy (28) couldn’t capitalise on their starts and were dismissed inside seven overs, the Indians bowlers looked to be in business.

It was a match in which Delhi needed a middle-order batsman to step up, and as noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, it’s not something this team have seen much of as of late:

"

If #DD are going to qualify for the Play Offs their middle/lower-order are going to have to perform. It'll be tested now. #IPL #MIvDD #MI

— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 5, 2015"

Thankfully for Duminy’s men, Yuvraj Singh made a telling contribution. He came out to bat after a testing run of recent form, and while he wasn’t quite at his free-flowing best, the India superstar played with a real maturity during his time at the crease.

While neither Kedar Jadhav (16) nor Angelo Mathews (12) offered much in terms of support, Singh continued to bat at a brisk pace. Eventually, his knock of 57 from 44—which included two trademark towering sixes—was the catalyst to Delhi getting toward a mediocre total of 152 for six.

As we can see here, courtesy of the tournament’s official Twitter account, it took a spectacular catch from Lendl Simmons to get Singh out:

Credit must go to the Mumbai bowlers, too, as their controlled efforts helped strangle the run rate. Harbhajan Singh was the star of the show for the Indians, as he picked up remarkable figures of two wickets for a meagre 11 runs conceded from his four overs.

Mumbai were definitely favourites at the interval, but within the space of two overs, the entire picture of this match was to shift dramatically.

As had been the case earlier in the day, a wicket fell on the first ball of the innings, as Zaheer Khan had Lendl Simmons pinned in front. As if that wasn’t debilitating enough for Mumbai, Nathan Coulter-Nile struck in the very next over to remove Hardik Pandya for just five.

With Mumbai reeling, play was suspended at the end of the fourth over because of lightning, as we can see here, courtesy of the Mumbai Twitter feed:

However, the break did little to revitalise the Indians’ chase, as they got even worse. In the two overs following the resumption, they lost two more wickets as Parthiv Patel (13) and Harbhajan Singh (5) were dismissed. After the latter wicket, the rain came once again, forcing another suspension of play.

The match resumed and the Delhi bowlers preserved a stranglehold on the match despite a prosperous partnership of 60 from Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma. Indeed, when the latter departed for a classy 46 after dragging on, their chances of victory were dealt a major blow.

Rayudu continued, though, and he was joined at the crease by the big-hitting Kieron Pollard. As such, the run rate remained healthy, and slowly but surely, Mumbai were creeping their way back into this one. Eventually, after some classy strokes from Rayudu and some massive hits from Pollard, they needed just eight off the final over.

In typical Pollard fashion, an enormous six got Mumbai to within one and the West Indies star—who finished up 26 not out from 14 balls—hit the winning runs with three balls to spare. Rayudu finished up unbeaten on 49 in what was a stunning fightback from Mumbai.

Both of these sides currently look like outsiders to make a playoff spot, but after victory in this game, Mumbai will fancy their chances of mounting a late run for a place in the top four. From the Indians' perspective, having someone with Rayudu's class in the middle order is a major positive.

The big bonus for the Daredevils from this game is the knock of Yuvraj Singh. If he can rediscover some of his best batting, his ability to score at a scintillating rate at the end of an innings will give this Delhi team an added dimension to their play.
