Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Results, Punch Stats and More from Superfight

Tim DanielsMay 4, 2015

Floyd Mayweather Jr. used his usual systematic defend-and-counter strategy to score a comfortable victory by unanimous decision over Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night. The latest triumph moves his career record to an unblemished 48-0.

For a while, it appeared Pac-Man was going to give Money a legitimate test, but the American took complete control in the second half of the bout. He found a comfort zone, and the underdog never put him in any serious danger.

David Kull of ESPN passed along the final scorecard:

The long-awaited matchup showed once again that Mayweather isn't interested in the entertainment level of his fights. He stuck to his game plan, preventing the usually powerful Pacquiao from landing his combinations on a regular basis.

Mainstream sports fans who tuned in because of the big-fight feel may have been disappointed in the amount of action. Money is only interested in winning, however, regardless of the post-event reviews.

The judges felt he did more than enough to accomplish that goal against one of his toughest challengers to date. The punch statistics confirmed the result.

CompuBox provided the complete numbers:

Nick Loucks of ESPN highlighted the shots to Pac-Man's head:

Pacquiao had a stretch starting in Round 3 and lasting until about Round 7 during which he was able to give Mayweather some trouble. He landed some nice combos, including a couple of big shots, but his success was fleeting.

Mayweather regained the advantage after that and never looked back. His conditioning remains terrific at age 38, and when you combine that with an approach that perfectly fits his skill set, an undefeated record is the result.

After the fight, CNN Philippines noted comments from Pac-Man, who believed he should have won:

Boxing has witnessed its fair share of controversial decisions. Saturday night's marquee bout wasn't one of them. Mayweather was the better boxer and rightfully received the decision.

Brett Okamoto of ESPN notes the current pound-for-pound king is still planning to call it quits after his next fight:

Only time will tell whether September will in fact mark the end of Mayweather's career. If it does, the good news is he can step away from the sport without having to hear about never having faced off with Pacquiao.

The superfight finally happened. Whether it was worth the hype it received over the past handful of years is up for debate. But it was important for them to face off at least once in order to settle the lingering debate.

Mayweather did exactly that with a resounding win.
