Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
Triple Threat Main Event
The most intriguing storyline heading into Payback is the Triple Threat main event match between Seth Rollins, Randy Orton and Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Rollins has been portraying the weasel heel, and it has worked to perfection. While taking so many losses is not proper booking, being the bad guy who will do whatever it takes to win fits his character to perfection.
In the same vein, Orton has been portrayed strongly in his feud against Rollins and deserves another shot at the championship. Reigns also has a viable case to be in the match, and recent Triple Threat main events have been incredible.
The result should be yet another show-stealing main event.
John Cena vs. Rusev
Despite the fact John Cena should have taken the loss to Rusev in the Russian Chain match at Extreme Rules, the result of that bout has actually added more intrigue to the possible outcome at Payback.
Another loss for Rusev would damage his character beyond repair. After winning the first match between the two at Fastlane, the current United States champion has won back-to-back PPV events in convincing fashion.
After Cena declared that this would be the final match in the series regardless of the outcome, there is a hope that the champion takes the loss in the “I Quit” match through dirty tactics and can’t do anything to get the title back because of his own stipulation.
Rusev needs the win and the U.S. title desperately. A loss would kill his character.
Bray Wyatt Returns Against Ryback
Over the past several weeks, Bray Wyatt has been sending ominous messages that are now clearly directed toward Ryback. The result must be a match at Payback.
Wyatt clearly needs the win after missing Extreme Rules following his defeat at the hands of the Undertaker at WrestleMania, and Ryback represents the perfect opponent at Payback. As one of the hottest midcard faces in the company, beating Ryback would give Wyatt a much-needed boost.
Time after time, Wyatt has proven capable of carrying feuds on the mic, and the build to the next PPV will be stellar due to his ability to sell the match. Add in the fact that Ryback was solid in his addressing of Wyatt on Thursday’s edition of SmackDown, and this program is working thus far.
With a subtle tease at the possible reformation of the Wyatt Family, the WWE Universe is excited.
