NFL Draft 2015: Rounds 1-7 Results, Grades and Hidden Gems

Tim DanielsMay 3, 2015

The 2015 NFL draft came to a close on Saturday with the final four rounds. The last day of coverage was overshadowed by a remarkably busy sports day. But the depth of this year's class should mean there were some players selected who are going to make an impact sooner rather than later.

That was ultimately the expectation all along. The group of incoming players featured only a select few top-end prospects. By contrast, there was a large selection available when it came to draftees capable of filling a certain void on the roster.

With that in mind, let's check out how the draft classes turned out around the league and grade each team's performance. That's followed by a round-by-round results recap and a deeper dive into a trio of hidden gems picked up on Day 3.

2015 NFL Draft Results

Top Day 3 Selections

T.J. Clemmings (OT, Minnesota Vikings, Round 4)

Clemmings was a fringe first-round prospect before word of a foot injury came out. It was expected to impact his stock, but seeing him still on the board for the third day was a surprise. He's a raw talent, but has the long-term potential to fill the crucial left tackle spot thanks to terrific physical tools.

The Pittsburgh product has the power to deal with bull rushers and the athleticism to handle speed off the edge. His technique definitely needs some work, but that's common for incoming players. Paul Charchian of League Safe loves the value of the pick:

Matt Kalil has only been marginally effective at left tackle for the Vikings. The team probably isn't ready to move on from the 2012 fourth overall pick quite yet. Taking Clemmings does give them an option should the current starter fail to turn a corner, though.

In the meantime, the coaching staff can work with him to iron out those technique flaws. Sliding to the fourth round is a disappointment right now. Over time, however, it may work out for the better, because the pressure to make an impact is far less, giving him time to develop.

Michael Bennett (DT, Jacksonville Jaguars, Round 6)

Bennett is an interesting case. He made notable strides as a junior at Ohio State, finishing with 42 tackles and seven sacks. If he could have continued that progress and showcased further improvement in his final season with the Buckeyes, we're probably talking about a first-round pick.

Instead, his numbers remained stagnant (41 tackles and seven sacks in 2014). He further illustrated himself as a reliable lineman with an explosive first step and good small-area quickness. He's perfect for filling a rotational role immediately before working his way into the starting lineup down the line.

Concerns about the lack of a high-end skill set is fair reason for him to drop a little bit. But staying on the board until the sixth round seemed excessive. Bleacher Report's Ian Kenyon thinks the slide will help him become a massive steal:

Bennett will join a solid Jacksonville front seven that added Dante Fowler Jr. early in Round 1. How much playing time he'll get right out of the gate is a mystery. That said, the long-term outlook remains positive as a dependable contributor up front.

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (CB, Cleveland Browns, Round 7)

Another player who may have come off the board on Day 1 based on talent, Ekpre-Olomu suffered a knee injury during practice in December that forced him to miss the College Football Playoff. As it turns out, it also caused his stock to tumble.

Before the injury, he showed an outstanding ability to read plays and good ball skills. Somebody capable of playing on both outside and slot receivers. Mary Kay Cabot of the Northeast Ohio Media Group provided remarks from the Browns' Ray Farmer about the uncertain timetable but positive outlook:

Cleveland does have some depth at corner with Joe Haden, Tramon Williams and Justin Gilbert. So the team can afford to bring Ekpre-Olomu along slowly to make sure he gets back to full strength. Exactly how long that could take isn't clear.

It's also possible he could move to safety depending on the physical toll the injury took, particularly on his speed. Even if that happens, Ekpre-Olomu should have little trouble making a big enough impact to greatly exceed typical seventh-round value.
