Robert Myers to Baltimore Ravens: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Jason MarcumMay 2, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens' starting offensive line was among the best in football in 2014.

However, whenever someone went down with an injury, it quickly became a liability. That's part of why Baltimore drafted Tennessee State guard Robert Myers in the fifth round with the 176th pick.

How Myers Fits the Ravens

Baltimore needed more depth along its offensive line after injuries hurt it badly down the stretch last year. Offensive tackles Eugene Monroe and Ricky Wagner missed multiple games in 2014.

That forced All-Pro right guard Marshal Yanda to play right tackle the final three games of the season, including the two playoff games.

There was a big drop-off on the interior once Yanda moved to tackle, and there wasn't depth behind Yanda and fellow starting guard Kelechi Osemele.

Myers will likely stick to guard in the NFL after being an all-conference performer there in the FCS ranks. The 6'5", 326-pound Myers started 35 games at TSU and was a second-team All-Ohio Valley selection as a junior and senior.

Here's part of his scouting report by NFL.com's Lance Zierlein:

"

Flashes desired functional strength with ability to anchor against bull rushers. Footwork is a plus and stays balanced in pass protection. Sound technician and recognizes D-line games. Initial punch has some juice behind it. Good body control and knee bend. Gets movement at point of attack when asked to drive block. Well-timed climb to second level.

"

Myers isn't very strong and was more of a technician in college. He rarely faced an NFL-caliber lineman, though, and he probably needs to bulk up in an NFL weight room before he's ready to play.

Initial Reaction to Myers Selection

Myers is a good prospect, but with him playing at the FCS level his entire career, he probably needs a year or two to adjust to the NFL.

That said, the Ravens have been really good at developing late-round linemen into NFL starters. If Myers has it in him to become an NFL lineman, expect Baltimore to get it out of him.
