Top Free Agent to Watch
La'el Collins
Perhaps the most intriguing story of the entire draft involved former offensive tackle La'el Collins. Many expected the big lineman to be selected early, but he ultimately went undrafted due to an off-field situation.
Shortly before the draft, news emerged that a woman thought to be Collins' ex-girlfriend died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after getting shot, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. While Collins is not viewed as a suspect in the shooting death, police have schedule a meeting with him for questioning, according to NFL.com.
With so much hanging over Collins, no team was willing to take a chance on him. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, it is quite incredible since he was once considered a potential first-round selection:
It isn't uncommon for players to slip in the draft due to non-football concerns. Missouri's Shane Ray and Nebraska's Randy Gregory are other examples of that from the 2015 draft, but Collins' situation is almost unheard of.
Per NFL Network's Albert Breer, in fact, he has never seen something comparable:
Though Collins went undrafted, all is not lost for him in terms of an NFL career. Once he's met with the police and the situation has been resolved, teams will undoubtedly line up to sign him. Since he wasn't drafted, ESPN's Andrew Brandt points out that he can sign a shorter contract and hit free agency earlier than drafted players:
There was plenty of talk about Collins potentially re-entering the draft in 2016, but as explained by NFL.com's Gil Brandt, that can't happen now that he has gone undrafted:
That stance was also reiterated by NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, per Robert Klemko of The MMQB:
"If he's not drafted [Saturday]? He would be the same as any other player in this draft," Aiello said. "He becomes a free agent like any other undrafted player. You only go through one draft. If he's drafted and sits out the year, he would go back into the 2016 draft."
Collins has a chance to be a star tackle or guard in the NFL provided he doesn't allow the disappointment of not being drafted to impact him.
It isn't often that a player of his caliber is out there for the taking, so the Collins sweepstakes will certainly be one of the most interesting situations to follow in the coming days and weeks.
Whichever team is ultimately lucky enough to sign him may end up with a potential Pro Bowler at a bargain price, and that will create a dynamic within undrafted free agency that isn't often seen.
