Corey Robinson to Detroit Lions: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Brandon AlisogluMay 2, 2015

After filling needs at almost every level of the draft, general manager Martin Mayhew was free to pick from any position to bolster his talented Detroit Lions roster. Since he had picked a wide receiver in every draft he'd ran up to this point, it seemed destined that he would sneak one in at the buzzer just to keep the tradition alive.

Instead, offensive tackle Corey Robinson was welcomed to the Pride.

Robinson is the third offensive lineman the Lions have added in the last three days, albeit the only tackle. Let's dive into the pick itself and what Detroit can expect from him this year.

Robinson is a Monster

The South Carolina product is a carbon copy of the offensive tackles that Mayhew and head coach Jim Caldwell love. He stands 6'7" and weighs 324 pounds, which is in line with LaAdrian Waddle (6'6", 330 lbs) and Cornelius Lucas (6'9", 325 lbs).

Robinson started 35 games at left tackle in college because of that size, but there is also an underlying strength there that you don't normally see:

"

Corey Robinson fits the profile at OT the Lions look for. Tall, massive w long arms. His bench numbers are really good considering his arms

— BeastMode (@BeastFBall) May 2, 2015"

He put up 28 bench reps at the combine, per NFL.com. As the fan above points out, that's a heck of a task considering how much farther Robinson has to push those 225 pounds.

There isn't a ton of athleticism there, though. While he can be move around some, he isn't a T.J. Clemmings-type considering his 5.3 40 time. But he isn't a total slouch either, though (31" vertical).

Where does he Fit?

It's unlikely the Lions shuffle around either of their tackles. Robinson is better suited to the right side long-term because he struggles with speed-rushers, and he doesn't have the polish to overtake Waddle. Josh Katzenstein of The Detroit News probably said it best in his recent tweet:

"

Based on his physical traits, Corey Robinson looks like a similar developmental prospect to recent UDFAs Cornelius Lucas and LaAdrian Waddle

— Josh Katzenstein (@jkatzenstein) May 2, 2015"

The comparison to Lucas is on point from a size and immediate-impact perspective. Detroit was forced to put the former undrafted free agent on the field last year due to a string of injuries. The coaching staff would much rather have allowed him to learn from the sidelines instead of enduring a trial by fire.

The best course of action for Robinson might be the practice squad. He'll have to beat out either Lucas or converted tight end Michael Williams to have a chance at the roster. Neither of those scenarios seems likely.

Was it a Good Pick?

Unequivocally yes.

Robinson has some unteachable attributes (height and length) to go along with the experience discussed above. And with some more coaching, he can build on his natural intelligence that helped him sniff out stunts and twists, something the Lions struggled with last season.

"

Really nice pick for the Lions to get Corey Robinson. Raw as can be, but big time upside

— Ian Wharton (@NFLFilmStudy) May 2, 2015"

The Lions might have struck gold with Waddle a couple of years ago. However, that doesn't mean the team should stop investing in the position. One bad injury or a couple of free-agency defections can decimate a line, as the fans have recently seen on the defensive side.

If Robinson capitalizes on his potential, Detroit would be insured against either possibility. Mayhew continued his strong draft with this pick, earning yet another A- grade from me.
