Ben Koyack to the Jacksonville Jaguars: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown
With their second pick of the seventh round and the 229th pick overall, the Jacksonville Jaguars have selected Ben Koyack from the University of Notre Dame. The Jaguars continued to focus on offense here, and we'll see if Koyack can make an impact in Duval County.
Koyack has been a contributing member of the Fighting Irish's offense for all four years of his career. He didn't get the full-time starting job until his senior year last season, in which he proved he deserved the job with his run-blocking skills and consistent hands.
Koyack only totaled 317 yards last season, but that was more of a decision from the coaching perspective rather than Koyack underperforming. Notre Dame typically used him as a run-blocker more than anything else, and he'll bring that to the Jaguars.
An argument can be made that Koyack is one of the best blocking TEs in the draft, and that's what earned his spot for Notre Dame and what can earn his place on the Jaguars roster. He's consistent and reliable at meeting defenders on the first and second level.
He holds the edge very well, and even has experience as a blocker in the slot position, which means the Jaguars could swing him out there for certain situations instead of fifth-round selection Rashad Greene.
Koyack does deserve some praise for his hands. He rarely dropped a pass for the Fighting Irish, and he values every throw he gets, especially since he wasn't used as much as he should've been in South Bend.
At 6'5" and 255 pounds, Koyack is tremendously big and could be a really strong over-the-top option if he works on the receiving part of his game. Very few tight ends have that size, and if he can figure out how to use his body like he does when blocking, he'd be tough player to defend.
The concerns with Koyack are his lack of experience as a starter and his route-running. Routes are never the primary concern with most tight ends, but Koyack is relatively rigid and uncreative when getting space for himself.
Koyack will be joining a pretty deep tight end group for the Jaguars. Despite the Jaguars having five tight ends on roster, I see Koyack as at least fourth on the depth chart to start, and could overtake Clay Harbor sooner than later.
Harbor was a solid blocking TE, but Koyack is fantastic. Behind Marcedes Lewis and Julius Thomas, Koyack can be the Jaguars third-string option, and will more often than not be featured as a blocker rather than an actual receiver.
Overall, this pick by general manager Dave Caldwell is solid, but there were some other needs he could've focused on. The linebacker core could've used a high-ceiling depth option, but instead, Caldwell went for TE.
The appropriation of needs by Caldwell may not be on point, but this selection is a decent one all the same. It remains to be seen how good Koyack will be in the receiving part of the game, and the conclusion to that will decide the overall value of this pick.
Overall Grade: C+.
