Ian Silberman to 49ers: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Peter PanacyMay 2, 2015

With the 2015 NFL draft winding down, the San Francisco 49ers elected to grab offensive tackle Ian Silberman out of Boston College in the sixth round.

One pick and one round after taking a punter, the 49ers looked to reinforce their offensive line in the second-to-last round. At 6'5" and 295 pounds, Silberman has the size to play the outside positions and also supplies depth along the interior positions.

According to his NFL.com scouting report (h/t David Fucillo of Niners Nation), Silberman may be better equipped to play guard at the pro level: "Played right tackle at Boston College, but is better suited to be a guard due to his power and lack of foot quickness. Silberman has some physical limitations, but he has the balance and natural power that should intrigue NFL teams."

San Francisco already has some depth at the center and guard positions. O-lineman Marcus Martin will likely shift into a competition with second-year pro Brandon Thomas, who was redshirted last year, for the starting left guard position in Mike Iupati's wake. Center Daniel Kilgore will likely return to his old position after missing much of 2014 with a leg injury.

Even after the 49ers added free-agent guard Erik Pears during the offseason, general manager Trent Baalke still needed to provide some depth behind starting tackles Joe Staley and Anthony Davis. This is the assessment made by CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

With Staley and Davis signed to long-term contracts, a backup swing tackle would help reinforce any potential injury-related departures.

Baalke was likely attracted to Silberman's pro style of play, given the prospect's familiarity with a run-heavy, play-action offense—attributes linked to Silberman, per Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.

Silberman wasn't projected as a drafted prospect at NFL.com, but he at least fits a specific need the 49ers had entering the draft. San Francisco had questionable depth along the exterior of the O-line. At least some of Silberman's traits are enticing enough to suggest he can compete for a backup job in the upcoming season.
