WR DeAndre Smelter to 49ers: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Peter PanacyMay 2, 2015

General manager Trent Baalke accomplished two things during the late stages of Round 4 of the 2015 NFL draft. He drafted the team's first wide receiver and also selected the first player of the All-ACL team.

The pick: Georgia Tech wideout DeAndre Smelter.

Smelter is recovering from an ACL injury suffered last November, per CBS Sports. But Baalke has shown a willingness to take risks on prospects with such injuries before. Last year, the 49ers drafted offensive guard Brandon Thomas and cornerback Keith Reaser and subsequently redshirted them for their rookie seasons.

The 49ers could do the same with Smelter in 2015.

When healthy, the 6'2", 226-pound wideout has plenty of positive attributes and potential. His athletic makeup made him not only a target for the NFL draft but also in Major League Baseball. Smelter now joins quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the only 49ers to be drafted in both the NFL and MLB, per Taylor Price of 49ers.com.

On the football field, Smelter emulates a lot of physical toughness seen by current San Francisco wideout Anquan Boldin, per NFL Network's coverage of the draft.

With Boldin entering a contract year this season, Smelter could emerge as a candidate to replace him if his knee heals properly.

And Bleacher Report's Matt Miller believes that Smelter has the potential to emerge as a legitimate threat after the recovery process.

Prior to his injury, Smelter averaged 20.4 yards per reception his senior year at Georgia Tech. He also did a serviceable job as a blocker, per Jeff Deeney of Pro Football Focus.

Smelter might not get to see the field in 2015. The 49ers' current crop of wideouts—Boldin, Torrey Smith, Jerome Simpson, Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton—will probably comprise the majority of the active roster at this position.

But redshirting Smelter for his rookie season wouldn't be a bad idea. Not only would he provide an option to replace Boldin down the road, but he also gives the 49ers some insurance if younger receivers like Ellington and Patton don't pan out after 2015.

This was an investment for San Francisco's future. And Smelter has all the traits to reach his high potential.
