Rashad Greene to the Jacksonville Jaguars: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Evan ReierMay 2, 2015

With their fifth-round pick and the 139th overall pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected receiver Rashad Greene from Florida State University. Greene won't travel far, and a lot of the fans he'll meet in Jacksonville most likely cheered him on in college as well.

Greene was one of quarterback Jameis Winston's favorite option in Tallahassee, evidenced by the back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons for the receiver. Quick, smooth and elusive, Greene will be Jacksonville's new top slot receiver.

At 5'11" and 182 pounds, Greene is definitely a bit small, even for a slot receiver. That didn't stop him from embarrassing defenders in college. though. He's competitive and instinctive and will be able to not only run good routes but also create room for quarterback Blake Bortles.

Greene has fantastic hands as well. This past season, he set a school record with 99 total receptions. He sometimes has streaks where he'll drop passes (7 in 2013), but if he works on it with the Jaguars, that can slowly turn into the occasional drop.

He has a lot of polish, and playing at a top program like Florida State really set him up well for the NFL. He's played with one of the best college quarterbacks in the past few years in Winston, and he knows how to adapt and learn with his QB.

Greene isn't without his faults, though. His size raises a lot of concerns about his durability, and he'll definitely need to gain some weight to be able to withstand hits in the NFL. Other than that, however, he doesn't have any major faults.

The Jaguars will most likely give him a fair chance at starting and move Allen Hurns further out wide. Greene finally offers a true option at slot, and he'll be able to prove that when he arrives for offseason training.

Greene will round out a wide receiver corps. that will have three sophomores as starters and Greene as a rookie in the slot. The Jaguars have made it a point to support Bortles, and Greene is just another step in that process.

In terms of draft sense, this pick is an absolute steal. He's thought by many to be a third-round or fourth-round talent, and being able to grab him this late really worked out well for the Jaguars.

I can imagine that the Jaguars were surprised to see Greene slip this far. I was thinking they'd have to settle on a less-talented, less-proven option, but instead, they got a guy who has experience and proven ability.

General manager Dave Caldwell is continuing to show that he has a distinct draft plan and that he is focusing on getting needs before taking the top talent.

His focus on drafting the best fitting guys rather than the most talented is typical of a GM looking to complete a team. With the selection of Greene, the Jaguars are one step closer to that goal.

Overall Grade: A-.
