TE Blake Bell to 49ers: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Peter PanacyMay 2, 2015

The San Francisco 49ers finally shifted their focus to offense at the start of Round 4 of the 2015 NFL draft by selecting tight end Blake Bell out of Oklahoma.

Bell marks the first offensive selection by general manager Trent Baalke and adds some supplemental depth to a questionable position for the 49ers.

San Francisco's top tight end Vernon Davis enters a contract year in 2015 and is also coming off one of the worst seasons in his pro career. Additionally, No. 2 tight end Vance McDonald has largely struggled as a receiver—having caught just 10 receptions for 149 yards over his two-year career.

Other backup tight ends like Derek Carrier and Asante Cleveland also supply depth, but the selection of Bell does give the 49ers offense added options.

Bell was initially a quarterback in his first three seasons with Oklahoma. He converted to the tight end position in 2014 and hauled in 16 receptions for 214 yards and four touchdowns. His 6'6", 252-pound frame makes him an excellent offensive target for an offense that needs big weapons.

Dane Brugler of CBS Sports highlights some of his positive attributes:

"

Physical ballcarrier with natural power, lowering his pads to pick up yards after initial contact. Quickly locates the ball to adjust and collect the ball. Showed the ability to scoop or pluck away from his body, using his wingspan.

Effort and attitude are there as a blocker, showing patience in space to initiate contact and drive his man.

"

CBS Sports initially projected Bell as a Round 5 selection, so it's possible that Baalke overspent a little on this tight end prospect. But the 49ers entered the fourth round with three picks, which allowed for some gambles.

Another aspect worth considering is that Bell—and all the 49ers' tight ends for that matter—won't have to play the role of being San Francisco's deep threat.

The acquisition of wide receiver Torrey Smith takes pressure off players like Davis, and potentially Bell, to run the deep routes. This should allow San Francisco's tight ends to operate in a more traditional setting.

If this is the case, Bell could wind up being a useful tool down the line. He also provides insurance for the 49ers if Davis' struggles continue into 2015 and McDonald winds up becoming a bust.
