Jamon Brown to St. Louis Rams: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown
The 2015 NFL draft is in full swing and the St. Louis Rams are capitalizing on the third round. With the No. 72 overall pick, the Rams grabbed offensive lineman Jamon Brown of Louisville.
So far, Day 2 has been dedicated toward rebuilding the offensive line.
With the No. 57 pick in the second round, the Rams grabbed mauling right tackle Rob Havenstein out of Wisconsin. The addition of Brown gives St. Louis yet another talented lineman to compete for a starting job.
The Rams still have the No. 89 overall pick in Round 3, so there's a chance St. Louis will add even more beef to the line.
This strategy is not surprising. At least, it shouldn't be.
The offensive line was by far St. Louis' weakest unit entering the offseason. Greg Robinson and Rodger Saffold are the only returning starters from 2014, so the team was in need of serious reinforcements.
Brown gives the group a new talented and capable member.
How Jamon Brown Fits in With St. Louis
The Rams selected Havenstein in the second round and he's expected to be the new starting right tackle.
Brown is listed as a tackle, so that gives the impression that the two rookies will duke it out for the starting job. Fortunately, that's not necessarily the case.
Tackle may be Brown's current position, but he's been adapting and switching positions his entire NCAA career.
Brown joined Louisville in 2011 as a freshman defensive tackle. He began the season on defense, but he made the midseason transition to left guard. He apparently did something right, because he never lined up on the defensive line again.
In 2012, Brown stepped in as Lousiville's right tackle and started all 13 games. As a junior, he was promoted to the blind side. Brown started 13 games at left tackle in 2013 and another 13 games in 2014.
Not only was Brown a reliable three-year starter for Louisville, but he also demonstrated a willingness and ability to adapt when called upon.
The Rams surely love that versatility. Thanks to that quality, Brown will be able to compete for a starting job at either guard spot and possibly even right tackle.

Brown does not have Havenstein's raw power or run-blocking skills. At 6'4" and 323 pounds, he's still a powerful man, but he'll have to improve his technique before he becomes a true mauler.
Surprisingly, Brown possesses underrated speed. He's quick off the line and has the ability to reach the next level while run blocking. That's a skill that will help Todd Gurley rip off giant downfield runs.

Initial Reaction and Grade for Brown Pick
The analysts are all over the place when it comes to projecting Brown's draft value.
Brown's profile on NFL.com had him graded as a fourth- or fifth-rounder. Walter Football had him as a Day 3 target as well, but CBS Sports had him pegged as a seventh-rounder.
With no consensus among analysts, it's hard to truly call this pick a reach, especially since we don't know how other NFL teams had him graded (the Rams are apparently high on him).
Brown fills a position of need and has extensive experience as a starter. And with so many needs on the line, the Rams needed a guy capable of playing multiple positions.
At the very least, this selection was far less shocking and less of a reach than the Havenstein pick.
