NFL Draft 2015: Team-by-Team Analysis and Grades for Rounds 1-3 Results

Joseph ZuckerMay 2, 2015

The first round of the 2015 NFL draft may have been the king in terms of hype and anticipation, but Rounds 2 and 3 were plenty enjoyable in their own right. Fans will be debating some of the bigger storylines to come from Day 2 for some time.

For those who haven't been keeping up to speed, here's how the draft has played out so far.

Day 2 was certainly rich with intriguing narratives as a number of talented college stars discovered their new homes. Among the talking points from Friday at the draft, these three are among the most exciting to follow.

Draft Grades

Arizona CardinalsB+D.J. Humphries is the headliner, but David Johnson is the best pick the Cardinals have made so far. Arizona waited and grabbed a very talented RB.
Atlanta FalconsA-The Falcons haven't made a bad pick so far, with Jalen Collins their best bit of work so far. Still, I have to question whether Vic Beasley can become a more multifaceted defender.
Baltimore RavensAThe Ravens are another team that's maximized each of its picks so far.Getting Maxx Williams in the second round was a massive steal.
Buffalo BillsBThe lack of a first-rounder obviously hurts the Bills, and Buffalo didn't exactly go above and beyond by taking Ronald Darby and John Miller with its first two picks.
Carolina PanthersC-The Panthers made the worst pick of the first round (Shaq Thompson) and followed that up by still failing to add an offensive tackle. Devin Funchess is a good player, but unless he packs on another 100 pounds, he's not going to improve the pass protection.
Chicago BearsA-The Chicago Bears had a great first round and continued that into Day 2. Eddie Goldman is a first-round talent, while Hroniss Grasu helps shore up the interior of the O-line.
Cincinnati BengalsCCedric Ogbuehi won't provide much of anything in 2015, so that leaves the Bengals' grade somewhat in flux. Cincinnati redeemed itself somewhat in the third round with the selection of Paul Dawson.
Cleveland BrownsB-What is it about the Browns that makes them so averse to the idea of drafting a WR? Cleveland desperately needs to improve the passing game and has done nothing to accomplish that so far.
Dallas CowboysA-I really love the Randy Gregory pick. His bust potential is pretty high, but in the second round, you take that gamble. He could be the best pure pass-rusher to come out of the 2015 draft.
Denver BroncosBThe Broncos covered themselves well with the selection of Ty Sambrailo. Denver opted for Shane Ray instead of an offensive tackle in the first round, which was a bit questionable at the time. With the addition of Sambrailo, the Broncos get that OT.
Detroit LionsBI'm not sure if the Lions drafted anybody with an exceptionally high ceiling, but Detroit added three players who can likely contribute immediately.
Green Bay PackersC+I was a little skeptical of the Damarious Randall selection in the first round, and the Packers may have made the worst Day 3 pick with Ty Montgomery.
Houston TexansBThe Texans reached a bit with Kevin Johnson but got great value in Jaelen Strong and Benardrick McKinney.
Indianapolis ColtsB+The Colts got lucky that Henry Anderson fell into their laps on Day 3, but sometimes you just get lucky like that. Indianapolis probably should've grabbed an offensive tackle by now, though.
Jacksonville JaguarsA-The Jaguars did extremely well with Dante Fowler Jr. and A.J. Cann. The knock comes with Jacksonville's preference of T.J. Yeldon in the second round. Not sure he was the optimal option.
Kansas City ChiefsB+The Chiefs have gone downhill a bit since the first round. Selecting Marcus Peters was a brilliant move, but nothing else has quite matched up.
Miami DolphinsA-The Dolphins have only had two picks so far, but they've managed to nail both. DeVante Parker is a great addition to the passing game, while Jordan Phillips provides a nice partner for Ndamukong Suh.
Minnesota VikingsB+You can rightfully knock the Vikings for not drafting a wide receiver yet. Minnesota at least did well on Days 1 and 2. Eric Kendricks might be the Vikings' best work in the 2015 draft.
New England PatriotsB-Nobody has had a steep drop from Day 1 to Day 2 than New England. Malcom Brown was a tremendous value pick for the Patriots. After that, they did little of note.
New Orleans SaintsBBoth Andrus Peat and Stephone Anthony were reaches on Day 1, and the Saints could have done better than Garrett Grayson. Can't say anything negative about the Hau'oli Kikaha or P.J. Williams selections, though.
New York GiantsB-Trading up to get Landon Collins in the second round doesn't erase the fact that the Giants gambled big time on Ereck Flowers in the first round.
New York JetsAThe Jets have had one of the better drafts so far. Leonard Williams was more value over need—albeit tremendous value. New York then addressed two big issues with selections of Devin Smith and Lorenzo Mauldin.
Oakland RaidersA-Mario Edwards Jr. is the only thing keeping the Oakland Raiders from earning an "A" grade. Of all the pass-rushers still on the board at that point, Oakland took Edwards. The Raiders might regret passing on Randy Gregory.
Philadelphia EaglesB+Nelson Agholor is one of those wide receivers who won't make game-breaking plays but still has a long, productive career. In Eric Rowe, Chip Kelly got the cornerback he desperately needed.
Pittsburgh SteelersB+Getting Bud Dupree at No. 22 elevates the Steelers' draft so much. Senquez Golson is a bit of a risk, but he could help solve Pittsburgh's issues in the secondary.
San Diego ChargersBThe Chargers moved up too high to draft a running back with a lot of mileage on his body over the last two years. Denzel Perryman is one of those guys who will exceed his draft projection, though. San Diego did well to grab him.
San Francisco 49ersB+Arik Armstead is a high-risk, high-reward guy who could excel under Jim Tomsula. Meanwhile, how the 49ers got Eli Harold in the third round is anybody's guess.
Seattle SeahawksC-Frank Clark has away too many off-field red flags to be considered a second-round pick. On talent alone, that pick was a reach, and then you throw in his past legal troubles. For a team that has gotten the draft so right in recent years, the Seahawks were major surprise on Day 2, and not in a good way.
St. Louis RamsC+Todd Gurley should become a great running back. The Rams just shouldn't have been the team to take him since running back wasn't a pressing concern. St. Louis also could have gotten a better QB than Sean Mannion in the third round.
Tampa Bay BuccaneersB+Jameis Winston was the obvious pick, and Tampa Bay did well to surround him with two more offensive linemen. Ali Marpet will be a name to watch in the coming months.
Tennessee TitansB+The Titans would have been better off trading the No. 2 pick, but they've done well despite that. Dorial Green-Beckham makes Tennessee's passing game very interesting for 2015.
Washington RedskinsBWashington hasn't been as comically inept as it was in past years, so that represents progress. Brandon Scherff remains a bit of a reach for now, and taking Matt Jones given what the Redskins already have is quizzical.

Top Day 2 Storylines

The Cowboys Draft Randy Gregory

Until recently, Randy Gregory was considered one of the top pass-rushers in the draft. Then came a report from NFL.com's Ian Rapoport and Albert Breer that somewhat vague mental health issues would scare some teams off from drafting Gregory.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers star eventually fell to the Dallas Cowboys at No. 60. He's looking forward to the opportunity to play in "Big D":

ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio wondered whether the job security offered to Jerry Jones helped him take the leap of faith with Gregory:

ESPN's Adam Schefter provided a little more information on Gregory's off-field situation. He reported that Gregory's camp wants to have him monitored at all times, likely similar to how the Texas Rangers handled Josh Hamilton. Schefter added that the Cowboys might be a good fit in that regard:

You can't argue with the potential value for Dallas here. Gregory is a first-round talent that the Cowboys grabbed late in the second round.

As long as he keeps his off-field stuff in check, Gregory will be a massive steal.

How Good Is Ali Marpet, Really?

It shouldn't come as a huge shock that a player from Hobart is being knocked for what was a lack of competition. Saying that Ali Marpet had an easier time in college than his FBS counterparts isn't entirely unfair.

The question is how much of Marpet's game film is a testament to his ability rather than him taking advantage of a major talent gap. Pro Football Focus' Steve Palazzolo remains a bit skeptical:

Sports Illustrated's Chris Burke added that it's nearly impossible to judge Marpet by watching his highlights alone:

While all of those criticisms are valid, Marpet looked great at the combine, earning the "Top Performer" designation in the 40-yard dash, three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle. He also made a name for himself at the Senior Bowl, per Pro Football Focus:

Marpet might be a year or two away, but that shouldn't be a big problem for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who almost certainly won't be a playoff contender in 2015.

Can the Tennessee Titans Make It Work with Dorial Green-Beckham?

Suddenly, the Tennessee Titans might have a dynamic offense on their hands. There's a chance it all goes wrong, but Fox Sports' Clay Travis believes that Tennessee could be extremely dangerous on that side of the ball if everything works out:

A lot will hinge on the play of Dorial Green-Beckham.

Many wondered who would take on the risk of drafting Green-Beckham. He was dismissed from the Missouri Tigers in April 2014 after getting arrested twice for marijuana-related charges. He was also allegedly involved in a domestic disturbance that led to his dismissal.

There's also the fact that Green-Beckham hasn't played competitive football in a year after he transferred to the Oklahoma Sooners. He doesn't believe his time away from the field will have stunted his potential, per Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com:

Even if you leave aside DGB's off-field baggage, there's the question as to whether he can even become a great wide receiver. His route running is somewhat limited, and he can be bullied a bit in press coverage.

If the Titans want to take a major step forward as a franchise, gambling on a guy like Green-Beckham might be a necessary hazard.
