SS Jaquiski Tartt to 49ers: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Peter PanacyMay 1, 2015

The San Francisco 49ers used their second pick in the 2015 NFL draft to continue solidifying their defense by picking up Samford safety Jaquiski Tartt with the No. 46 overall pick.

Tartt's 6'1" and 221-pound frame is ideal for the safety position. He also has long arms (32 "), which is a trait that general manager Trent Baalke loves.

Perhaps the best attribute to Tartt's game is his intimidating presence.

Rob Rang of CBSSports.com wrote: "Highly aggressive defender, who attacks the line of scrimmage in run support and in defending the middle against crossing routes. An intimidating hitter who likes to lower his shoulder into ball-carriers, often resulting in explosive collisions."

San Francisco has lacked an intimidating presence over the middle of the field since the free-agent departure of safety Donte Whitner prior to the 2014 season.

And building up the 49ers defense wasn't a bad idea, according to Bleacher Report's Matt Miller.

As a first-team All-American in 2012, Tartt amassed 94 tackles, five takeaways (including two defensive touchdowns) and was tied for 11th place in the FCS in passes defended (14 or 1.27 per game) per The Sports Network (h/t CBS Sports).

If there is a knock against Tartt, it's his ability in the coverage game. This is the point made by David Fucillo of Niners Nation. San Francisco will hope to develop his efforts there and will have time to do so.

The 49ers will likely employ the same safety tandem in 2015—Erick Reid and Antoine Bethea. Slot corner Jimmie Ward will look to solidify his role at the nickel position as well.

On the surface, Tartt doesn't appear to have any legitimate role to start his pro career. Yet Bethea is aging and Reid has a history of concussions, according to @Tre9er of Niners Nation and Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. And backup safety Craig Dahl may not inspire that much confidence.

A best-case scenario would be to develop Tartt and turn him into a starter with prowess alongside Reid in a couple of years.
