Can Luis Enrique and Barcelona Afford to Rest Luis Suarez vs. Real Sociedad?

Jason PettigroveMay 8, 2015

Luis Enrique goes into the game against Real Sociedad knowing that should his Barcelona side triumph, they will have taken another huge step toward winning this season's La Liga title.

It may end up being the last domestic match they play this season if a proposed strike goes ahead from the following weekend, as detailed by Oliver Todd of the Daily Mail:

"

All matches from the May 16 start date of the strike will be suspended including the showpiece final at the Nou Camp at the end of the month.

The law was agreed last week with the backing of the professional soccer league and aims to create a more level playing field for clubs in Spain's top two divisions by sharing out TV cash more equitably.

However, both the RFEF, and its influential president Angel Maria Villar, and the players' union (AFE) have come out against the new rules and both organisations have backed halting competition across Spanish football.

Before any proposed strike kicks in, Barca also have to be professional in Bavaria as they attempt to consolidate their first-leg position in the Champions League and knock Bayern Munich out.

It would be remiss of Enrique and his charges to even concentrate on anything other than David Moyes' side, however, given they are one of only four sides to beat them in the league this season.

La Real have the staff to trouble the Catalans, and the Scot will be aware that he could become the only manager to do the double over Barca should he come away from the Camp Nou with a victory.

It's a tough ask, mind you, with Fussball Wettpoint noting that while Barca may struggle at the Anoeta Stadium, they have won every fixture against Sociedad at Camp Nou in the last decade. Further, the visitors have only managed one goal on three out of those eight occasions.

With that in mind, Lucho may well consider it a good time to rest one or two players, and when asked about rotations in his pre-match press conference, he didn't rule it out.

While Luis Suarez didn't score during the first leg against Bayern, he worked himself into the ground, as he has done on so many occasions this season.

The nature of his game often sees him get through far more graft than his two attacking contemporaries, and his tiredness toward the end of the game on Wednesday was evident after another super shift was put in by the No. 9.

Lionel Messi will continue to play every minute of every game, and after Neymar's recent tantrum, it appears he has regained the full confidence of the manager.

Suarez shouldn't necessarily feel like the fall guy, but this could be the perfect time to give Pedro Rodriguez a run out and allow Suarez the benefit of a weekend's rest before unleashing the Uruguayan at the Allianz Arena.

The intensity from Suarez throughout the campaign will eventually take its toll. Better now than later.

Something has to give somewhere. Luis Enrique knows it too.

Castigated for his rotations during the early part of the season, the manager has had the last laugh with almost all of his squad fresh and able. And happy:

He has got almost every decision right to this point.

Suarez might not agree with a one-game demotion, but it could be one final masterstroke that tips the balance the way of the Blaugrana.
