Liverpool Move Ahead In Depay Race
Wednesday, May 6
According to French newspaper l’Equipe (h/t Charles Perrin of the Daily Express), Paris Saint-Germain are no longer in the hunt for the Oranje star, boosting the chances of Premier League sides.
In another piece of positive news for the Reds, according to The Sun (h/t James Whaling of the Daily Mirror) the Merseysiders are in “pole position” for the winger, as Manchester United are “dragging their heels” in their own pursuit of the 21-year-old sensation.
Sources for The Sun have also apparently revealed that the Eredivisie's top-scorer would prefer a move to England.
Europe's Finest Chasing Depay
Friday, May 1
PSV sporting director Marcel Brands, who spoke to Fox Sports (h/t Goal's Stefan Coerts) this week, confirmed there is plenty of interest in the winger:
"PSG and Liverpool are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis. United have only informed us about their interest. The list of interested clubs has grown in recent weeks. But Bayern Munich are not among the teams that want to sign him.
It's only logical that there is a lot of movement around Memphis. He is still a young player, but is already hugely efficient. He should be proud of that. There isn't usually a lot of movement in the transfer market at this stage of the season. It's an exception that so many clubs have already shown an interest in Memphis. That only illustrates that he's on the right track.
"
It's largely thanks to Depay's free-scoring form in front of goal that PSV claimed this season's Eredivisie title, earning the attention of his European suitors.
The forward scored 21 goals in 28 league outings this season to lead his side to the Dutch title and recently sent social media into a frenzy after "liking" a Liverpool-related comment via his official Facebook account, per Metro:
Louis van Gaal's Red Devils are another Premier League power to have become heavily linked with the Dutch attacker, with Depay having studied under the tactician when he was at the Netherlands helm.
That being said, Van Gaal moved to dispel those rumours last week, insisting that he isn't in the hunt to sign every player he's coached who happens to be enjoying good form, according to Goal:
"I don't discuss it with the media. You know my answer. I have a lot of relationships with players. I cannot buy all the players I have coached already."
Both Liverpool and Manchester United would have reason to make a move on Depay, with Mario Balotelli proving a bust at Anfield, while Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao have endured unreliable form this term.
Were he to move to Old Trafford, Depay would join fellow Dutch internationals Van Persie and Daley Blind, which could have some influence in his final decision.

Parc des Princes assuredly stands out as the most competitive arena for Depay as the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lucas Moura and Edinson Cavani look to be stiff competition but a lot will also depend on PSG's departures this summer.
A switch to the Ligue 1 titans may offer Depay his most lucrative option, but there still remains a couple of Premier League big guns hoping to steer his attentions toward England.
