2015 NFL Draft Results: Grades and Order Listing for Each Franchise Before Day 2

Matt FitzgeraldMay 1, 2015

The 2015 NFL draft finally commenced on Thursday. For all the talk of crazy trades at the top, the first round was rather stable and predictable.

Jameis Winston went first overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Instead of trading their second overall pick, the Tennessee Titans held onto it to secure reigning Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota.

Both Winston and Mariota figure to be franchise quarterbacks, so it's hard to knock their respective teams' front offices in terms of grading. The other picks are open to a bit more scrutiny, but most teams seemed to play it rather safe.

Check out the updated order ahead of Friday's second and third rounds, along with grades for every team and analysis of the marquee picks.

1Tampa Bay Buccaneers Jameis Winston, QB, Florida StateA-Bucs evidently feel off-field issues check out, but Winston's 18 interceptions in 2014 are a concern.
2Tennessee Titans Marcus Mariota, QB, OregonA+Wisely chose to hold onto a player who may well be the best QB in the class.
3Jacksonville Jaguars Dante Fowler Jr., DE/OLB, FloridaADefensive-minded head coach Gus Bradley got just what he wanted.
4Oakland Raiders Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama A+A tremendous weapon and instant starter for young QB Derek Carr to target.
5Washington Redskins Brandon Scherff, OT, IowaBAlthough it upgraded the offensive line, Washington was bold to pass on Leonard Williams.
6New York Jets Leonard Williams, DL, USCA+Went heavy on cornerbacks in free agency. Now add Williams to form a terrifying defensive front.
7Chicago Bears Kevin White, WR, West VirginiaAA playmaker to replace the departed Brandon Marshall.
8Atlanta Falcons Vic Beasley, OLB, ClemsonANew head coach Dan Quinn gets a freak athlete to plug into the defense.
9New York Giants Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami (Florida)C+Could have added another receiver to the mix, though Flowers should help the Giants get physical in the running game.
10St. Louis Rams Todd Gurley, RB, GeorgiaB+Gurley may prove to be special. A torn ACL and the diminished value of Gurley's position raise potential red flags.
11Minnesota Vikings Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan StateBWaynes' ability to change direction has been criticized. Mike Zimmer gives him a good chance to succeed.
12Cleveland Browns Danny Shelton, DT, WashingtonARun-stopper the Browns desperately needed could also play three downs.
13New Orleans Saints Andrus Peat, OT, StanfordBAddresses a need on the offensive line, a solid if unspectacular pick.
14Miami Dolphins DeVante Parker, WR, LouisvilleA-Hard to criticize getting a receiver of Parker's caliber but maybe a bit of an overload at the position. No excuses for QB Ryan Tannehill now.
15San Diego Chargers*Melvin Gordon, RB, WisconsinATraded up with San Francisco to land Gordon. Will he be worth it?
16Houston Texans Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake ForestA-Slight of frame but great in man coverage. Should be ideal fit in nickel role.
17San Francisco 49ers*Arik Armstead, DL, OregonB+Seems like a bit of a boom-or-bust prospect. Should have strong mentors in San Francisco to guide him.
18Kansas City Chiefs Marcus Peters, CB, WashingtonAMight have landed the best cornerback in the draft. Andy Reid is an ideal coach for any lingering off-field concerns.
19Cleveland Browns (via Buffalo) Cameron Erving, OL, Florida StateB+Could have picked a receiver, but many are still available on Day 2.
20Philadelphia Eagles Nelson Agholor, WR, USCBUnderrated speed and a nice route-runner. Agholor should excel in Chip Kelly's offense.
21Cincinnati Bengals Cedric Ogbuehi, OT, Texas A&MC+Ogbuehi coming off a torn ACL. Bengals had a chance to pair a special receiver opposite A.J. Green.
22Pittsburgh Steelers Bud Dupree, DE/OLB, KentuckyA-Not the greatest college production. Nevertheless, strong motor and amazing physical tools headed to a stable organization.
23Denver Broncos*Shane Ray, DE/OLB, MissouriB-The trade up with Detroit is a considerable cost. Ray must prove he can be complementary star opposite Von Miller.
24Arizona Cardinals D.J. Humphries, OT, FloridaACardinals upgrade big area of need with a great athlete.
25Carolina Panthers Shaq Thompson, OLB, WashingtonBUnclear if Thompson will play outside linebacker or safety. Either way, he fits well and has lots of defensive talent around him.
26Baltimore Ravens Breshad Perriman, WR, UCFB+Seems like a big risk. With Ozzie Newsome making the call, the rest of the AFC North has to feel a bit scared by Perriman's size and speed.
27Dallas Cowboys Byron Jones, CB, ConnecticutAAmerica's Team nails down a defensive back with experience at safety and corner.
28Detroit Lions*Laken Tomlinson, G, DukeBNot the flashiest pick, especially with a most evident need at cornerback.
29Indianapolis Colts Phillip Dorsett, WR, Miami (Florida)C-Don't the Colts have enough receivers? Offensive and defensive lines should be the priority going forward, along with safety.
30Green Bay Packers Damarious Randall, FS, Arizona StateCShores up the secondary but could have landed a key piece in the front seven.
31New Orleans Saints (via Seattle) Stephone Anthony, ILB, ClemsonBExpectations should be rather high for Anthony to shine soon as a replacement for Curtis Lofton.
32New England Patriots Malcom Brown, DT, TexasAMany felt Brown should have went sooner. Now the reigning Super Bowl champions have him.

Analysis of Marquee Picks

2. Tennessee Titans: Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon

Since Winston and Mariota will be linked for evermore, they'll both be discussed in this section, but the focus will be mostly on the latter signal-caller.

A string of incidents follows Winston to Tampa Bay, yet he does hail from a pro-style offense and will be playing with two huge targets to throw to in Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. Provided he can stay out of trouble, Winston's odds for success seem favorable—and it could happen in his rookie campaign.

ESPN draft expert Todd McShay believes in Mariota, though he does have some reservations:

Mariota may have to marinate a little longer before he takes full charge in Tennessee. His athleticism, quicker release and intangibles give him more upside than Winston, though.

The Titans could have easily caved and given their second pick to anyone, especially with Zach Mettenberger still in the fold and having the tools to perhaps be a starter someday. They instead stayed put and acquired the new face of the franchise.

General manager Ruston Webster could still add another weapon for Mariota to throw to in the second or third rounds alongside promising youngsters Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter. Veteran Hakeem Nicks also joined the team recently.

Everything is shaping up rather nicely, and in a rather weak AFC South, perhaps Tennessee can take a big step forward with its dynamic, dual-threat QB in 2015.

6. New York Jets: Leonard Williams, DL, USC

Holy home run, Batman! Leonard Williams was regarded by some experts as the best overall player in the draft, including Bleacher Report's Chris Simms, as stated in the video above.

The Jets brought back cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie in free agency this offseason. They also lumped Buster Skrine into the secondary. Now New York features a defensive front of Williams, Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson.

Is it a stretch to say the Jets are the best in the NFL at two of three areas on their defense? Head coach Todd Bowles has to be licking his chops over the roster first-year GM Mike Maccagnan is assembling.

"There weren't any trade options that came across the desk that were worthy to move out of the [pick]," said Maccagnan of the atmosphere before he called in the decision on Williams, per NJ.com's Steve Politi. "We felt he was too good a value to pass up."

But Wilkerson's contract situation could be a snag to the aforementioned dream lineup. The fortuitous Williams pick now makes the extension-seeking Wilkerson easier to trade, per Bleacher Report insider Jason Cole.

On the other hand, Wilkerson may not want to leave the Big Apple after seeing Williams fall to New York on draft day. The havoc he could wreak with the newly arrived rookie and Richardson will be horrifying for their opponents to ponder.

Whatever happens to Wilkerson in the future, at least Williams will be around for the next several years. The tandem of Williams and Richardson alone is enough to strike fear into the opposition.

15. San Diego Chargers: Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin

In the previous two drafts, not one running back was chosen in the first round. This year, there were two, as the Chargers moved up just two spots to snag Gordon after trading with the San Francisco 49ers.

It's hard to imagine the Houston Texans would've scooped up Gordon with Arian Foster still on the roster. Nevertheless, San Diego is now hoping it has its new feature back now that the Ryan Mathews era is over.

Gordon is as good as they come in terms of college production, having scampered for 2,587 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2014 alone. Those totals seem more like a strong two-year starter rather than an extraordinary single season.

That's one reason Gordon was a special case and why the Chargers felt comfortable investing such a high pick in him. Even if Gordon falls short as a pass-catcher, San Diego can lean on reliable scatback Danny Woodhead in that role.

For those who discount Gordon's ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, ESPN's Jim Trotter has an emphatic answer:

Mind blown, right?  Not to say Gordon will be an all-round monster in the form of LaDainian Tomlinson, but he is a special runner. This is what the Chargers will count on most.

Star QB Philip Rivers has to be thrilled he'll be handing the ball off to a playmaker of Gordon's caliber in 2015. It should help take the pressure off Rivers and may make him a bit more comfortable about finishing his career in San Diego.

Often among the more talented teams in recent years, something has always gone awry for the Chargers, preventing them from appearing in a Super Bowl. If Rivers sticks around for the first several years of Gordon's career and the defense plays well enough, San Diego has a chance of doing something special soon.
