Nelson Agholor to Eagles: Twitter Reacts to Pick After Marcus Mariota Rumors

Tyler ConwayApr 30, 2015

Everyone came into Thursday wondering whether Chip Kelly would land his Pac-12 superstar of choice, and he did just that.

It just wasn't who anyone expected.

The Eagles selected USC wide receiver Nelson Agholor with the No. 20 pick, filling a hole opened by the departure of Jeremy Maclin this offseason. USC athletic director Pat Haden commented on the pick:

Agholor, who doesn't fit Kelly's typical mold of large wideouts, made 104 receptions for 1,313 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller ranked him No. 41 overall on his final big board.

A bit of a reach at No. 20, Agholor will also have to deal with being known as the pick Kelly made after he failed to land Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported before the first round started that Philadelphia made a historically huge offer to move up to No. 2:

The Tennessee Titans wound up keeping the selection and taking Mariota, the reigning Heisman trophy winner. Kelly indicated he never thought the trade had much of a chance, per Reuben Frank of CSN Philly:

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports put the mood in Philly best:

Michael Baumann of Grantland tried to assuage his disappointment by being relieved Philadelphia didn't take a defensive back:

Baumann's is far from the only bright side in this situation. As we've seen in the past—most recently with Washington in 2012—mortgaging players and picks for a quarterback does not always work out. The Eagles may be able to build a better overall roster now by avoiding the blockbuster.

Kelly also said Agholor was the top remaining player on their board at No. 20, per Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com:

Matthew Berry of ESPN already has Agholor as a potential fantasy sleeper deep in drafts:

Ultimately, how Agholor performs initially will help inform how we view the Eagles' inaction on Thursday. If he winds up a star and Philly adds some more pieces with the players it would have given up for Mariota, everything will be forgotten.

If Mariota winds up a perennial Pro Bowler as Kelly fizzles out in Philadelphia, we'll remember that trade as the one that got away.
