Melvin Gordon to Chargers: Trade Details, Twitter Reaction in 2015 NFL Draft
The San Diego Chargers moved from the 17th to 15th overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday to select former Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen detailed the trade San Diego made with the San Francisco 49ers to move up and grab its new feature back, which the Niners officially confirmed on Twitter:
Pro Football Talk added further details to hint at the rationale behind the Chargers' draft maneuver:
Adam Schefter of ESPN reacted to the pick, noting a gaudy comparison that's been made between Gordon and a certain other ball-carrier in the division:
NFL Network's Bucky Brooks believes Gordon is a great pick:
Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego added an interesting anecdote:
San Diego now has a tremendously talented tailback to put behind star quarterback Philip Rivers. Gordon ran for 2,587 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2014, so he figures to be a great choice if he can have even half of that production at the NFL level.
Along with Todd Gurley going 10th overall to St. Louis, there have now been two running backs drafted in the first round. There hadn't been any taken in the top 32 since 2012, so it shows how special Gurley and Gordon figure to be.
